Monday night, Joy Mullen brought a room full of broken drums back to life at Art Out Side.

Joy has recorded on 25+ albums and played the Juno Awards as a touring drummer. Now she turns discarded drum heads into fibre art. “I’m always curious about who the drummer was,” she told us. “You can tell if the person played jazz or punk when you look at a drum head.”

Set lists scrawled in pen. Wear patterns from years of technique. Joy turns all of it into something new — a way, she says, for the music to “carry on in a new form.”

Documentation of my recent “creative alterations” order.
I got a shirt that my dear friend didn’t want to part away with, it had a pattern of beautiful drawing of naked woman all over painted by another artist. The paint was fading away. She asked to stitch over it.

I did. I started in Vancouver at the studio, continued at the rooftop with my friend drummer that I started singing and stitching with, then on the ferry to the island, then on the island in my home studio and in the nature at the place I love to swim and appreciate the nature untouched by human waste for now…and then my son had a week of camp on the lake next to a small Ukrainian church I go to sometime, that week the priest was away and it was open for few hours for free flow praying, I was there with two other women praying and doing the blessing for the priest while I was free flow stitching … some days I was left alone with lights off and only light coming through the windows, stitching on top of the naked women that I was praying for.

and then I took it back to Vancouver. We talked with the owner of the shirt about skin sensitivity and how knots and threads can be a challenge on the inside when you wear something on the naked body, and I can relate.
I got a cotton tape that I would usually use to sign my childrens name on all the school clothes so if it’s lost it would return to them, and I started to write messages of care, love, strength and protection on it. So that the woman who wears this shirt feels empowered to go through any challenges that are thrown her way. I asked my Ukrainian friends to share their words, and Olya the owner of the shirt remembered how her grandmother called her Sonechko and that became one of the messages on the shirt along with others.
I wrote those while staying at my other friend looking after her cats in return of her providing me a safe space in Vancouver, continued at @makerlabs where my child has a studio and working on the art and helping others and me to execute their ideas. Next it was back to the art space where it started. I added inner thread “button” to wear this shirt inside out. And took the final videos💛💙

This contemporary textile artwork of mine "Beauty of Chaos" is currently on display and part of online gallery / project run by @nanaimoartscouncil where poets can submit their poems to match the artworks.
I got permission to share one poetry submission that is very special, written by a mother who speaks the same soul language as me in her poetry. Donna Lavender, her poem was submitted by her daughter - an amazing human @joyondrums who I got lucky to meet through my art practice and get to know through the past year through different experimental sketch collaborations, e.g. Experimental percussion and drumming live performance during recent Radical Creatives Night at our shared communal studio of Radical Creatives :) and now she pulled me into a new adventure to perform with her on stage! This Friday we will be on stage at Parksville museum church as part of @parksvillemuseum Storytelling festival , where Joy will be sharing some of her stories with a bit of drumming along with musical collaboration with @3030.nate who is a storyteller too, and I will be story-stitching on the drum heads painted by Joy, and making sounds on a harp and if I'm brave enough reading my poetry too. All around grief, loss, rebirth and womenhood. We will sketch this collaboration live.
Join us if you are on the island to be a part of an experiment 💛

"Discarded Memories of a Grandmother" textile painting got a new story added to it as part of ongoing Installation story Inner Bloom - in my studio in Vancouver. A dried cotton flower is now part of the painting.

This painting is dedicated to my grandmother, a single mother, who worked from entry level position at a manufacturer of textiles to the director of the large facility producing the high quality dense cotton, the way it used to be. She raised her son, my dad, through many economical and political turbulences, collapses and darkness of USSR, the country that doesn't exist anymore.

My memories of her are her gold and stones rings, karakul fur coats from that time, glossy brown cupboard filled with fabrics - the most dense cotton I ever touched, the patterned wallpapers on the walls of her apartment, and deemed light of darker room she enjoyed to be in filled with smoke from her cigarettes, and few rays of light coming through the window curtains. When I was left with her, while my parents were working, I'd sit on the floor next to her feet or on her patterned armchair, and watch Santa Barbara - the series that were always on and watched religiously, so that all stories there felt like a distant family stories, a family from another side of the world that we have never got a chance to meet.

One more addition to the artwork is coming this weekend, the gold hanger.

The installation (transforming while it lasts) is open to visit today (Saturday, May 16th) from 5pm and till late.

On display and part of Inner Bloom Installation and our conversation on womenhood:
InnerBloom: FlowerHeads by Elina Browerman @browermanphotography
InnerBloom story with works by Masha Kushnir @mashakushnir
InnerBloom story with works from personal archive created in collaboration with Masha Weisberg and George Kronberg.
Social Fabric of Migration with female stories - by me.
I'm also making alterations and sewing while on the site.
And if internet connection is collaborating with me this evening, there will be screening of Between The Mountains and The Sky documentary / after the sunset

Inner Bloom,
DM me if interested 🤍
