🎬✨ The Women In The Directors Chair: Career Advancement Module came into my life at the exact right time.

I’m forever grateful for these last six months being guided by Dr. Carol Whiteman and supported by the incredible women in this cohort. I’m excited to move forward with the projects this program has helped me to develop and I can’t wait to witness what these incredible directors put forth into the world. I’m so inspired by you all. Let’s do this.

This week we’re spotlighting powerhouse filmmaker Joy Webster — a writer, director, editor, and producer whose short films have taken the festival circuit by storm.

Joy is the creative force behind It Was You, Buzzard (which snagged the Golden Sheaf Award for Best Drama at Yorkton 2020), Game, In the Weeds, and Menace. Her talent also extends into the music video world with the bold and expressive YEAH YEAH by Melanie?, which she wrote, directed, produced, and edited herself.

Joy’s work has screened at major festivals including NewFilmmakers LA, Brooklyn International, San Diego, and Cinéfest Sudbury — earning her accolades like two Best Short awards from Canadian Film Fest, the NSI’s A&E Short Filmmakers Award, and three Golden Sheaf awards. Her films have aired on CBC, showcased at Cannes through Telefilm’s Not Short on Talent, and even been shortlisted for the Sony Future Filmmaker Awards. Currently, she’s one of just eight directors selected for the prestigious WIDC Career Advancement Module — and we can’t wait to see what she creates next. 🎥💫
