Dr J. R. Carpenter has become the first Writer in Residence for Gair Wood!

Gair Wood is a 37-hectare woodland site created by the University of Leeds to support research, teaching and community activities.

An award-winning poet and practice researcher at the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Cultures has been awarded funding to explore how creative arts can translate environmental research for the public and support the University’s long-term sustainability goals.

As Gair Wood Writer in Residence (GWWR), Dr @jrcarpenter will work alongside scientists from the School of Earth, Environment and Sustainability (SEES) and the Leeds Ecosystem, Atmosphere and Forest (LEAF) Centre, bringing together creative writing, physical sciences, ecology, and conservation.

The project will examine Gair Wood’s dual identity as a high-density research location – home to 66,000 newly planted trees designed improve biodiversity and to capture carbon – and a working landscape intersected by public footpaths, busy roads, and private land.

“The creation of the Gair Wood Writer in Residence is a really exciting and unique opportunity,” Dr Carpenter says. “By bringing the creative arts into dialogue with the physical sciences, ecology and conservation, I hope to help foster a deeper community connection to Gair Wood, improve understanding of Gair Wood within the University itself and offer scientists working on the site different perspectives on the work they do.

“Ultimately, I’ll be playing a part in establishing Gair Wood as a truly multi-disciplinary – and potentially nationally significant – centre for woodland research, education, and interpretation. I can’t wait to get started.”

The residency builds on Dr Carpenter’s current practice research, which uses poetry, performance and publishing to explore how the language we use to describe weather shapes public understanding of climate.

LEEDS!
We are celebrating Tom Branfoot's poetry debut with a book launch party at HPBC on 23rd Oct. Tom will be joined by guest readers J.R. Carpenter @jrcarpenter and David Dobson @david_dobson_.

Hyde Park Book Club, Leeds @hydeparkbookclub
Friday 23 October, 7-10pm
£6.99 entry, redeemable towards book purchase (ticket link in bio)

Tom Branfoot's debut poetry collection explores nature during a time of political crisis, drawing its title from the Middle English use of 'volatile' to name birds and other winged creatures. Pulling apart what it means to dwell, habitat loss appears synonymous with eviction, and birds become fellow travellers in our precarious present.

Last weekend, I assembled a crack squad of historians, archaeologists, academic researchers, artists and mudlarks for the Hands on History Symposium: Mudlarks of the Thames Foreshore.

It was a fitting finale to my four-year postgraduate research with @qmulgeography and @molarchaeology, during which I have conducted in-depth ethnographic and geographic studies of Thames mudlarking and the extraordinarily varied landscapes of the riverbed at low tide.

I hope this is the start of many conversations and collaborations!

Huge thanks to all the speakers and audience members, to @handsonhistorymudlarks @thamesfestivaltrust and Guildhall for hosting us, and to AHRC’s Collaborative Doctoral Partnership scheme for supporting the project through their Researcher-Led Activity Fund.

Introducing Session 4 of the two-day symposium I have curated with @handsonhistorymudlarks on #mudlarking and about the #Thames #foreshore

🔍 Fishes and Habitats of the Thames — Wanda Bodnar (QMUL/ Institute of Zoology, UCL)

The Thames has undergone dramatic transformations, from a natural tidal ecosystem to one of Europe’s most heavily modified urban estuaries, followed by remarkable ecological recovery. This talk explores how these historical changes have shaped present-day fish communities and habitats, highlighting the loss of natural intertidal environments and recent habitat restoration initiatives.

🔍 From Seahorses to House Martins: A Mudlark’s View of Foreshore Ecology — Barbara
Polonara (Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, and Oxfordshire Willdife Trust)

An overview of the unique and often endangered wildlife encountered whilst mudlarking along the banks of the Thames. From Teddington to Greenwich, the river is teeming with life and home to an incredible variety of species; from seahorses to seals, to herons and house martins, here is the most compelling wildlife I have encountered during my foreshore wanders.

🔍 Dwelling in the Mud: Speculating About the More-than-human Histories of Mudlarked
Artefacts — Hannah Niblett (University of Leeds)

The foreshore is a site for recovering London’s lost human histories, and yet mudlarked artefacts invite us to consider their ecological as well as human histories. I propose that rather than washing off the mud, we dwell in it, exploring the centuries during which human artefacts were part of more-than-human, anaerobic, riverbed ecologies.

🔍 Windlarking — J. R. Carpenter (University of Leeds)

Wind is an elemental medium, linking disparate objects found on the foreshore. The term ‘mudlark’ comes into print in 1796, in reference to men and boys ‘who prowl about, and watch under the ships when the tide will permit’. The implication is that they’re looking for goods fallen or stollen from wind-powered
sailing ships coming into London from all corners of the Empire. Thinking through the critical lens of wind allows us to draw together radically different spatial and temporal scales.
