SLICE OF CHEESE, PLEASE: Having a NICE TIME all around New York with my little “0 Minutes Wait” subway siren @leighola77. We're walking until our feet have heartbeats, dining on delicious fare, reveling in antiquity, Wikipedia'ing places on Leigh's history hit list and generally taking in all the sights, sounds, sweats, stinks, stanks and SMELLS of New York City. Tomorrow? We have OFFICIAL BUSINESS OF THE HIGHEST ORDER at the Archive Conference. Been waiting for my big moment to tell my stinky, little story the dang whole year. I got 45 minutes to jam it into those people. 43 minutes of multimedia mayhem and 2 minutes for apologizing for my face and unapologetic merch load.

NYC was the beginning. Baltimore is next.

This past April, Design Intersect came to life at the @madmuseum in New York City.

Different disciplines. Different perspectives. One creative community.

Graphic design, architecture, industrial design, and visual arts came together—connecting professionals, emerging creatives, and students through conversation, learning, and meaningful exchange.

Now, we’re taking the next step.

Before it was a major motion picture, Pentagram celebrated Ian Frazier’s classic humor essay “Coyote v. Acme” with a lavishly illustrated holiday card.

In his never-ending quest to capture the Road Runner, Wile E. Coyote has been a faithful customer of the Acme Company, whose products—Spherical Bombs, Rocket Skates, Spring-Powered Shoes—invariably fail him at the worst possible time.

In “Coyote v. Acme,” Ian Frazier presents the opening statements of an imaginary lawsuit by Coyote against Acme for his personal injuries caused by the faulty devices, citing 85 occasions in which they “did cause him bodily injury due to defects in manufacture or improper cautionary labeling.”

Originally published in @newyorkermag in 1990, Frazier’s piece is now the basis for “Coyote vs. Acme,” a live-action/animated comedy directed by Dave Green and starring Will Forte, Lana Condor and John Cena, in theaters this Friday.

Back in 2013, Frazier’s piece also inspired our annual Pentagram holiday card, where we reimagined the designs for five Acme gadgets, rendered as a series of highly detailed technical diagrams. Frazier’s essay was reprinted as a mini legal brief with drawings presented as supporting evidence. Pentagram’s @mbierut and @jrfo worked with industrial design partner Daniel Weil, who carefully considered each cartoon product, making sure the contraptions would functionally work.

The look of the diagrams was inspired by the photo-realistic illustrations of the McMaster-Carr hardware catalog. The designs for the gadgets undermined Coyote’s legal claims with special safety features like “screw-in detonator” for the Spherical Bomb and a “weighted armor jacket” to be worn with the Rocket Skates. But Wile E. always skims over the fine print.

/////////// POWER OF THE PODIUM ///////////
In April, I had the opportunity to participate in Design Intersect, a multidisciplinary design convening hosted by United Colors of Design at the Museum of Arts and Design (MAD) in New York City.

What made the event special was its premise: that the future of design does not exist within silos. It exists at the intersection of disciplines, perspectives, and lived experiences.

Throughout the day, I joined an incredible group of creative leaders including Jesse Reed, Yah Li Toh, Shabbar Sagarwala, Cey Adams, Jesse Hill, and Su Mathews Hale to explore how graphic design, industrial design, architecture, and visual arts can learn from one another and create greater impact together.

During my conversation with Mustafa Horton, we discussed architecture as advocacy, equity in the built environment, leadership, visibility, authorship, and the responsibility we have as designers to create spaces where people feel seen, valued, and connected.

One theme continued to surface throughout the day: great design rarely happens in isolation.

The most impactful solutions emerge when we are willing to learn from one another, challenge our assumptions, and recognize that no single discipline holds all the answers.

As someone who has spent nearly two decades working at the intersection of architecture, advocacy, leadership, and community engagement, I continue to believe that our greatest opportunities lie not in protecting our individual lanes, but in building bridges between them.

Because the future will not be designed by architects alone. It will be shaped by designers, artists, technologists, community leaders, educators, policymakers, and visionaries working together.

The work continues.

With Power and Purpose.
