“Deck of Cards” in the flesh... the vision of my loving partner Silas Presley- his first full length album, recorded (mostly) analog at No Fun
Club in Winnipeg

All of the artwork and design was done by me over the course of the past 2 years, and my voice is featured on 2 tracks on side A of the album. This is the first time my voice has ever been on physical media, which is just so wonderful and surreal

What a beautiful thing it is to have been able to witness and be involved in the creation of this album. So much hard work, dedication, and creativity was channeled in order to bring this to fruition, and I couldn’t be more proud of Silas and all of our friends involved in its making 💫

Anyways, it’s been a long time coming...

J Riley Hill has been working as an audio engineer in Winnipeg for the last 15 years, he has experience ranging from capturing artists live off the floor to co-production, editing and mixing. Recently he has worked on releases from Zoon, Cartel Madras, Holy Fuck, Irvin Miller, Cec and Esteban Seunarine.

Riley has been part of the No Fun Club team since the studio opened in 2020, he acts as audio engineer and is also the resident computer nerd, providing support for other engineers/producers working in the space and helping to keep tech stuff running behind the scenes.

Riley has a penchant for keyboard shortcuts, implausible edits and unique mic preferences.

💿 TRACK BREAKDOWN 1: ENORMOUS 💿

ENORMOUS is the oldest sibling of this record. It was the first to come out, set the tone for the project, brought everyone together, and steered the ship while acting as an anchor at the core of the project.

Fred and I started this groove to a drum sample in his house and basically mapped out the whole song on guitar and bass. I added some vocals in the moment but had to take it home and sit with it for a bit before adding a melody I actually liked. A lot of the time Fred, Paul, Tirian, and I will work something out in person, but this song kind of already had glue and so we sent the demo off to Paul and Tirian who recorded stuff and sent it back! I’d been wanting to collaborate with Marisolle for some time and held a portion of the song I had hoped she would contribute to and then she wrote one of my favourite verses 🦋

Kingo Halla and I had a couple calls to chat the planning and recording direction of the tune. I’m so grateful for his expertise and his guidance in the recording process of getting some 70s soul texture. Sitting in the control room listening to the playback of my vocals I couldn’t stop smiling. I’d never enjoyed a recording of my voice as much as that day!

We recorded most of the song live as a band with backing vocals (increddddible team), and then added a few more layers and sparkles after✨ and Marisolle came over to The Clubhouse right in those early days to record her vocals.

The last slide is when we got to perform it at the release show last month with Roots in Harmony choir🥲🫂
