🌟 Coach Spotlight: Joanna Setó

We’re so proud to highlight Joanna Setó, one of the graduates of our first Academy cohort back in May this year.

With the support and mentorship of the Academy, Jo has just accepted her first job in the semi-professional game - with Lewes FC Women, a club aiming to fight for promotion to the second tier of English women’s football.

From juggling five different jobs to now stepping into a paid coaching role that will challenge her and help her grow - this is exactly what we set out to build the Academy for.

Jo, who graduated university last year, is being mentored by our founder, Ivi Casagrande, through pre-season - building her own processes and systems as she steps into the role and sets herself up for a strong season ahead.

Last season, while in the Academy, Joanna was placed as a S&C coach at Montpellier Villa while also doing a video analysis placement at Lewes FC.

This is what a real coaching pipeline looks like.

For everyone who’s expressed interest in the Academy - we’re currently developing the next cohort for next year. It’ll look a little different from the pilot, with a continued focus on giving practitioners the right tools to succeed in their careers in the women’s game. More details coming soon.

12 years ago I started this journey as a strength and conditioning coach and it came as a complete surprise. I was a pre-med student, with an earlier dream of becoming a doctor. Life is never linear…

The turn came after years trying to make it as a player in Europe - the agent moves that never happened, a visa about to expire, and a flight back to Brazil I really didn’t want to take. I remember sitting in that airport dreading it, knowing how hard it would be to be a woman in this industry back home. Then a message came through from my sports psychologist at university: apply for a Masters in Exercise Physiology. The rest is history!

I went back to Ohio and fell in love with it. Graduate assistant → first performance coach the university had ever had, connecting the pitch to the weight room, trial and error all the way. Then Director of Sports Performance in Michigan, sport scientist with US Youth National Teams, Orlando Pride, Brighton, and eventually leading performance staff for Brazil and Ireland Women’s National Teams.

4 years ago something shifted -I started caring less about my next title and more about giving people the bigger picture: the perspective you lose when you’re heads-down in the day-to-day.. That’s when I started with @lewesfcwomen, and my passion for this club has only grown since. We built the basics well, even with next to no resources. And now, being able to develop young coaches through @casagrandecoachingacademy is a dream I’ve carried since day one - to sit back, let them trial and error, and be there when they need it. Because when I started, that support wasn’t always there, and it could get lonely.

For developing the game 🤍⚽️

From start —> To finish

It’s been almost 2 weeks since graduation and I still don’t really know how to sum up the journey this past 10 months has been

@casagrandecoachingacademy has given me learnings I didn’t know I needed, people I didn’t know I needed, growth and opportunities I didn’t know I wanted

I have learned so much, I know I’ll be understanding and expanding on those learnings for a long time to come

So many sessions, talks with experts, time with athletes, planning with other coaches. This year has been wild and cannot be replicated. The Academy will grow into an industry defining movement, but nothing will be quite like this group. Cohort 1, over and done

@ivicasagrande You have been, are, and will continue to be incredible

Guinea Pigs - let’s go shake up the system

One season embedded in real club environments, helping develop players, navigating real staff dynamics and pressure.

This year’s Academy cohort worked across women’s football as performance coaches, analysts, and support staff - inside real MDTs, making real decisions, mentored through every one of them.

What we develop is practitioners who understand the layers. How their discipline connects to every other discipline in the room. How to read an environment before trying to change it. How to communicate across departments and build trust with people who think differently.

That comes from doing it, with structured mentorship alongside you, asking the hard questions, across an entire season.

Proud of this group and the clubs who opened their environments and trusted the process. Also would like to thank our board, all the world leading experts who contributed with their time and wisdom, to @yetieurope, @park_ssc @cacciaandtails , @lewesfcwomen as partner hub , @whoop

We’re continuing to build this into a pipeline - developing practitioners inside partner clubs, creating a workforce that arrives prepared. If you want to partner with us and know more info please go to link in my bio: casagrandecoaching.org/academy

Congratulations to the Class of 2026!

A year ago I walked away from the Ireland national team - the happiest I’d ever been in an environment - because I could see something the women’s game was missing.

Not another course but a coaching pathway. One where young practitioners learn by doing it, inside real club environments, with mentors and experts around them.

Tomorrow, five coaches graduate from the first cohort of @casagrandecoachingacademy . Four women. One man. Ten months of placements, reflection, and growth across partner clubs in the women’s game.

They didn’t wait for permission. They showed up, put the work in, and built something they can evidence.

I’m incredibly proud of every single one of them.

We’re building partnerships for the next cohort now. If you’re a club, get in touch. If you’re a coach, register your interest!

10 months. 5 coaches. 3 clubs. 1 question:

What happens when you stop teaching coaches and start putting them in it?

We placed them inside real club environments — grassroots to professional — and built everything around them:

→ Continuous support and guidance throughout every placement
→ A curriculum designed around the challenges they actually face
→ Monthly reflections on their growth
→ Peer learning with a cohort going through the same thing
→ A bridge between their qualifications and the real world of coaching

They found their voice. They led when nobody asked them to. They hit walls and found ways through. They built things from nothing. They reflected harder than they ever have.

Saturday 30 May — our first cohort graduates.

This is what it looks like when a coach is given the right environment to grow.

Joanna joined our Incubator Programme as a Football Coach and Performance Analyst. Through her placement she’s been leading on-pitch warm-ups and designing performance programmes at Montpelier Villa, while also stepping into a Performance Analyst role at Lewes FC Women — supporting the technical staff with Individual Development Plans and helping players see the game differently.

Two clubs. Two roles. One coach connecting it all.

That’s what our programme is built to do — not just teach, but place coaches in real environments where they can apply, adapt, and grow. Joanna didn’t just learn about systems — she started shaping them.

Our first cohort graduates on 30 May. More to come.
