POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

My beloved Charlie-boy on this September Labor Day Sunday, which is unusually dark and rainy and quite beautiful here in Beverly Glen,
Where instead of frolicking in sunshine he’s relaxing on the cozy bed with his daddy and brother. It’s warm and happy here and we love you. Good opportunity to clean your paws thoroughly. Just saying.

Junebug. We lost our JB today. She was beautiful, smart, loving, sneaky, hilarious, and she loved a good dinner party! Always sitting at the table being part of the conversation. She ruled the roost with her big voice and bigger attitude. Who’s gonna tell me what to do now?! She was one of those “soul pets” that’s taking a piece of my heart with her. When I met her on Wade St 16 yrs ago, she picked me and Shad wouldn’t let me deny her choice. Tonight, there is a hole in our hearts as we bid her a fond farewell and thank her for all the years of love. Godspeed, little one.

"Where the sidewalk ends." A song I wrote to the beautiful poem by Shel Silverstein back when I was in high school. Holly Schak used to sing this so beautifully it would make my mother happy.

in the words of the divine Leonard Cohen, "democracy is coming to the USA." Rejoice. Keep hope alive. Let's all agree not to elect criminals to be President of the United States. Especially already convicted ones. I think we should all agree on this one. Sending big love and hopes for continued greatness in peace in America
keep America great

this is a reel I made mostly of the burnt relic that was once the famous Junior's Deli, owned and operated by Marvin Saul, at the intersection of Pico and Westwood Boulevard

A Deli so good that great luminaries like Mel Brooks himself would often dine in there.

After Marvin's death, several years ago, the place closed and has been closed for years and empty.

the other day while going to the guitar center across the street, I took a walk around the neighborhood and could smell the smoke. And then I noticed that the entire building had been burned to the ground. The night before. It hadn't even been roped off yet. You could walk right into the ruins. Which, of course I did.

but many people were noticing it and wondering, when did this happen? How did this happen? There was a shoe repair man, whose shop was attached to the building. And fortunately, or maybe intentionally, he moved out just in time.

So I filmed the smoking wreckage, which is here, and I connected it with some photos of the place and Marvin Saul from the past, just to remind us how the past, present and future often intersect and of course, to do it.

zappa was known to occasion this place from time to time, and so I wed this tribute to his music, "sleep dirt."

Two days ago, I happen to walk by the former Junior's Deli the day after it burnt to the ground. It wasn't even contained. Just a big bird frame of ashes in decades of burnt relics and ashen memories.

so it had been closed for years, it once was one of the great delis. Many stars- even Mel Brooks - would often eat there. just north of the corner of Pico and Westwood Boulevard. across the street from guitar center

It's just so happened that the shoeshine place which I joined. The building was closed about a week before the burning.

The whole building from the street to Wayback in the back parking lot was still smoking. Neighbors were kind of freaked. Everyone was suggesting it must be some kind of insurance deal. Seems that way.

of course I films a lot from behind them in front and through the burnt windows. This real contain some of that footage which, inspired by the Black Keys, got enriched.

to the beautiful song, written by Sharon Robinson and Leonard Cohen, and performed here by Sharon Robinson, "Summertime."

This is all with film shot by me near my home here in Beverly Glen,

including that soaring flight
which I shot in slow motion and which is so beautiful to me.

Especially with this beautiful, timeless song.

Sharon wrote the melody first, and then Leonard wrote the words.

Sharon will be returning to McCabes in Santa Monica on March 17, one of the greatest venues in this town to hear great music
and
to perform her song cycle of miracle timeless songs written with and performed by her and Leonard Cohen.

Including this one I'm pretty sure .

this song is one of my most recent joyful discoveries; perfect pure timeless splendor of love and time. #leonardcohen #hallelujah #summertime #zollo #tedemptionsong #1111 #1122 #charlie #loveunbound

my friend Lucinda Lynn Langford in Culver City just a few houses down from the home of Judy Scott, who had a great holiday party there. Lucinda who is my second good friend who is a Lucinda (hi cindy underwood!) is a nurse at Cedars Sinai, the grandmother of a great songwriter, singer named Lilah who has two bands, and is studying music business, and long time, and she is a close friend of the legendary Ramblin' Jack Elliott, who is still with us and performing in San Francisco in just about a week.

She was raised for the first 12 years of her life in Japan because her parents were working there, but she rarely saw them and became very close to the woman who did take care of her, her Mama-San.

she has a home in Idaho where she has a bunch of cattle and horses and other animals.

And is a good old friend of my friend, Allan Wachs; it was at his show at Kulaks that we met.

and she is a great harmony singer, and someone that takes care of other people every day. As opposed to most humans who don't.

my dear friends, the very talented and joyous Robert Morgan Fisher and Judy Scott performing "American Noel, "by the late great Dave Carter, and recorded and performed by Dave and Tracy Grammer on their 2008 album of that title. This was just some of the music at Judy and Monica's beautiful Culver City home holiday party
which is next to the home where Satchmo lived
a beautiful night of music and great food and friends and song

My great friend and fellow author Judy Scott, who wrote one of the greatest and most heartfelt and intimate books about her friend, Leonard Cohen, and their time together on Hydra, "Leonard, Marianne and Me: Magical Summers on Hydra."

if you love, Leonard, you are one of us and you will love this book. Leonard gave Judy his blessing to have it published.

it's a beautiful, poetic, funny, bold, historic and tenderly written book.

it was edited by my pal, Robert Morgan Fisher, who introduced me to Judy a while back now.

Here she is pictured in my backyard in Beverly Glen, where the sun shines bright. except at night.
