I was honored to celebrate and give gratitude to @corikresge and @saysmay who helped usher in this #modernwomen21stcenturydance project - that I spoke about at the #playwithmatchesworkshop in-person gathering. Thanks too to @yoshikochuma a MODERN WOMEN: 21st Century DANCE contributor who also attended.

✨ Today I was able to see @lbthompson27 in real time and meet her luminous mother Linda and celebrate L.B.’s photographs (because is there anything she can’t do?) and watch @corikresge dance and work her magic as the “creativity doula” who has facilitated Playing With Matches collaborative workshops since the pandemic.

I participated in a deep listening exercise that was beautifully meditative and also joyfully noisy, bought the coolest coloring book about 21st century dance and dancers, watched a performance piece that tied together text, painting, movement, and sound, and even grabbed a glass of wine in Moynihan WITHOUT MISSING MY TRAIN in Penn. 10/10 Saturday experience. ✨

When a person/artist/friend you admire deeply, who has known and affected your dancing for nearly 30 years, watches you move through a rehearsal of Bardo, a seminal work of @molissafenley , and says “you’ve grown” …priceless. Thanks @bettiedejong for@your wisdom - and extra thanks to @bkw2369 @rossleclair @thejoycetheater for making this special visit happen and for @julemberger for capturing the moment so beautifully.

@jodimelnickdance loves music, but unlike a lot of choreographers, she doesn’t need music. For Melnick, a dancer and choreographer who has been a staple in the postmodern dance world for decades, movement “always, always, always” comes first—sometimes at the expense of using music or sound at all.

“I’m constantly making material, making movement, and it’s not because there’s sound on,” Melnick tells @danceteachermagazine. “I’ve never heard a piece of music and said, ‘Oh, my god, I want to choreograph to that.’ "
