On today’s episode of Roxy’s Tales, I sat down with my brother from another mother, New York City skateboarding legend Alex Corporan, to revisit the downtown NYC scene of the 1990s and 2000s. NYC-born and raised, Alex shares stories about growing up in Washington Heights and downtown, discovering skateboarding, and finding family through Supreme, punk rock, hip-hop, house music, and New York nightlife. Together, we revisit the people, places, parties, and creative energy that made downtown New York such a unique cultural force.
Alex takes us behind the scenes of Supreme’s early years, the legendary back room & the interconnected world of skateboarding, music, fashion, and nightlife. He talks about the tight-knit crew that formed around Supreme in the 90s, how skateboarding went from being dismissed as a subculture to becoming a global cultural phenomenon, and how community helped change perceptions of skate culture. Alex also discusses his book “Full Bleed” and his documentary “Empire Skate”, which chronicles the New York skateboarding scene and the people who helped shape its style and identity.
The conversation also turns personal as Alex reflects on chosen family, the importance of community, and Harold Hunter’s lasting influence. From the streets of New York to skate spots around the world, this episode captures a pivotal era when skateboarding, streetwear, music, nightlife, and art collided. If you’re interested in 90s NYC, Supreme history, New York skateboarding, or the people who shaped modern New York culture, this is a deep dive into a scene that still influences the world today.
