Here’s a hack for organizing against authoritarianism: repurpose your networks.

Campaigns, movements, and political efforts rarely start from scratch. They are built on the foundations of existing relationships, out of groups of people who have known each other in a different context and who decide to repurpose their relationships for a new, higher purpose.

Lesson number 6: Don’t start from scratch. Any network will do.

Follow along for our new series: How to Save the Free World, from Ami Fields-Meyer and Julia Angwin

Testing out this Substack channel with a recap of our recent mass call, sponsored by The 50501 Movement and coverage of it in The Contrarian. Link in bio and here:

“I recently led off a video call for The 50501 Movement — the group bringing you the No Kings 3 march this weekend — to hear from activists in New Hampshire, New Jersey, and Salt Lake City who are using local zoning codes and permitting processes to stop or slow the Department of Homeland Security from buying or leasing vacant warehouses near cities for use as immigrant detention centers.

"On the March 5 mass call I introduced Andrea Pitzer, author of One Long Night: A Global History of Concentration Camps. Her remarkable research shows that concentration camps are a relatively modern development of the 1890s, with the invention of barbed wire and the machine gun, two features that enable the control of a large population with a small force ....”

Today’s Little Free Library and bookmark feature is Hawaii! We were so lucky to have this be my husband’s first duty station when we got married, so we spent a 3 year honeymoon here. 💛 I included a few of my favorite photos of that magical place. The first photo includes the tallest sea cliffs in the world on Molokai, please read more about the islands history, if you haven’t! Such an important story.

A huge THANK YOU to @lexiand.co for putting the bookmarks out!
