📚 𝗛𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗼 𝗕𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗙𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘀!
A friend gifted me a copy of "YOU HAD ME AT WOOF" by Julie Klam some time ago, and it has been beckoning me from my TBR shelves. This is a heartwarming and humorous exploration of love, companionship, and unexpected life lessons discovered through the author's relationships with her canine friends. The narrative begins with Otto, Klam's first Boston terrier, setting the stage for a series of adventures in dog parenting, fostering, marriage, and the arrival of her daughter. The book's charm lies in its relatable anecdotes about the joys and challenges of caring for these four-legged companions. The emotional depth escalates with touching accounts, particularly the chapter on Moses, evoking tears and a desire to cherish every moment with furry friends. While some storytelling elements lacked cohesion, Klam's honesty and humor shine through, making this a delightful read that celebrates the profound connections between humans and their beloved dogs.

It went down to the wire, but as of 8:15 am on 12.31, book list 2023 was complete. As one does, I have a running spreadsheet with a list of 200+ books to be read. Unfortunately only 11 of these were actually on that list at the beginning of the year 🤷🏼‍♂️. So 2023’s list is dedicated to books that look fun on a whim or are inspired by a life in progress. As always, and in no particular order, here are some highlights:
•
8 was a life-giving (and hilarious!) visit with an old friend. 6 and 10 let me hang out in Paris for just a little longer ❤️
•
I read 22 in one day. I will hold onto it and go back to it for years. 4 made its way to my “must-read” for everyone list.
•
I’ve been trying to get to 13 and 16 for a while. They were more than worth the wait. As promised, Joan Didion has words for things we know but can’t say. Arundhati Roy weaves words into a magical landscape where you want to linger as long as she’ll allow.
•
I would have loved 17 even if it weren’t written by a friend. That fact that it was made it all the more impressive. Congrats again to Yvette! Can’t wait for the next one!
•
11 was a high school English class read-along and a great book to chat about with my girl.
•
3 reminded me that a good book is good for your heart; 19 reminded me that art is healing; 7 reminded me that Boston Terriers are, too.
•
26 made me laugh out loud, so I had to jump straight into 27. Though it seems impossible she wasn’t there before, it also put Ann Patchett on my radar, resulting in 32, the perfect note for ending my year, and one of the most spectacular books I’ve read in a long time.
•
And now a new year of reading, book store wandering, #tbr list stalking, and more list making. 🥂to your 2024.

A moment I’d been waiting for — a celebration of Katherine Vaz’s new novel, ABOVE THE SALT, which publishes in November! I’m just so proud of and happy for dear Katherine. & I thoroughly enjoyed toasting the book with lovely friends old and new, with a feast! (Loved that ginger-soy salmon, @joeybatscafe pasteis de nata, etc.) Such a good time was had that I forgot to take a dinner table photo of everyone. Brava, Katherine — can’t wait to see this book out in the world. People, if you haven’t pre-ordered your copy, do it now!

Book Details

An irresistible and sweeping love story that follows two Portuguese refugees who flee religious violence and reignite their budding romance in Civil-War America.

“Vaz's work is gorgeous at every level—singing sentences and pull-you-in plot. She is the real thing, an American treasure.” —Tayari Jones, New York Times bestselling author of An American Marriage

John Alves, son of a famous Presbyterian martyr on the Portuguese island of Madeira, spends his childhood in jail and in poverty. When he meets Mary Freitas—though the adopted daughter of a master botanist, her true lineage is the subject of dangerous rumor—a spark kindles a lasting bond. But soon their families must confront the rising blood tide of warfare between Catholics and Protestants. Fleeing with only what they can carry, John and Mary are separated and arrive at different times and places in a rapidly growing and changing mid-nineteenth-century Illinois.

Years later, John settles into his life as an educator at Jacksonville’s nationally renowned school for the deaf, and Mary is a gardener in Springfield for handsome, wealthy Edward Moore. After John and Mary reconnect, the home of rising politician Abraham Lincoln provides a prime setting for their courtship.

In poignant and lyrical prose, Katherine Vaz’s Above the Salt is a captivating and beautiful tribute to the power of true love and the sacrifices we make to harness it.
