A fortnight ago, I had what will be one of my most memorable weekend as one of the top 14 finalists for the 2024 Rhodes Scholarship West Africa Finalist Interview in the beautiful city of Accra, Ghana, with all expenses covered.

The 3-day weekend was an opportunity to interact with the 13 other finalists as well as the selection committee. Upon our arrival on Thursday, we visited the former Ghanaian President John Kufuor, an Oxford Scholar. Later that evening, we had dinner with Dr. @ike_chioke who shared with us the history of the Rhodes scholarship in West Africa.

On Friday, we had leadership training sessions led by Prof Osita Ogbu and Dr. @pascalbrenya, reinforcing our collective ambition to positively impact the world. In the evening, we acquainted ourselves with the selection committee, learning about their roles and sharing insights into our backgrounds.

Saturday marked the culmination with final interviews, each finalist having a 20-minute “hall of fame” (as Dr. Ike Chioke would call it). After the interview, we were all handed certificates and letters from the Rhodes House, and the 3 scholar-elects were announced.

While I may not have secured the scholarship, I am immensely thankful for the singular opportunity to engage with some of the brightest minds on the planet (#TheGreat14!!!!). I take immense pride in each one of us and eagerly anticipate the remarkable strides we will collectively achieve.

Congratulations to everyone, especially @ablavi_mawugbe, @ewere_ea, and @the_ayomikun. I am confident in the remarkable achievements you will attain @oxford_uni.

Lastly, I am thankful to everyone who has made this possible; @rhodes_wa, @rhodestrust, my referees, mentors, family, friends and ultimately, God, who makes all things beautiful in His own time!!!!!

This past weekend, I was in Accra, Ghana, for the Rhodes West Africa Scholarships Final Selection Event with 13 other finalists from across the region.💫🧠

As a young man from “the bottom of Lagos” - Isale Eko, my selection as a finalist meant something bigger than me. It represented not just my aspirations but hope and deep inspiration for my people and our place.🌱😮‍💨

And even though I missed the ultimate, I had an experience so delightful, met people so wonderful, and created memories so beautiful that the journey itself could pass as a reward.🎖😊

Here is the FINAL PART of my video journal/documentary of the culmination of the 2024 Rhodes Scholarship for West Africa.✨🎬

Behold, a 2024 Rhodes Scholarship Finalist for West Africa!

Did I win the Rhodes? No. Am I a winner? Hell yes!

I cherish beginnings like this 🥹❤️
“Such a bold move, Fkay!” were the words I uttered as I applied for the Rhodes. I vividly recall the day I submitted my application, just minutes before the deadline, feeling the fear of hitting that submit button. It was my first attempt at any graduate school scholarship, and what a way to start—with one of the world’s most prestigious scholarships.

One day, I received the call that I had made it to the top 27 among numerous West African applications. I couldn’t believe it. Having initially applied without much confidence, I had almost forgotten about it. I was so happy and grateful to God for that call.

The pre-interview followed, and once again, I secured a spot in the top 14. It was then that I realized there was something about me they sought. The final interview took place in Accra, Ghana, it was three days filled with fun, bonding, reflection, and a reaffirmation of my commitment to driving change.

During this time, I engaged with some of the brightest minds from West Africa—doctors, lawyers, computer scientists, you name it. Truth be told, every finalist showcased incredible plans, and I believe each will accomplish remarkable feats in the near future. However, only three slots were available, and three exceptional individuals claimed victory.

Congratulations once again @ablavi_mawugbe , @the_ayomikun , @ewere_ea . A well-deserved win. The formidable 14 is poised to impact the world, so keep an eye out for us 🤭🤗

Now, should I delve into the topic of GhanaianJollof, or perhaps I should just maintain my peace? 🤣🤣🤣
