On my sketchbook, a pencil from my friend Sophie. @jump_doctor She gave it to me a few years ago. On it are William Kentridge’s words: Find The Less Good Idea. I have always loved this. And I am happy that now is finally the time to use it.
______

William Kentridge interprets "the less good idea" as a creative philosophy that prioritizes the secondary ideas that emerge during the artistic process over the initial "grand" idea, to take the pressure off and to be able to arrive with less pressure at the perfect idea 🤍

We’re delighted to announce that An Introduction to Stage Design, a new exhibition in the Wolfson Gallery, National Theatre, is now open!

The exhibition showcases the work of 13 young people aged 16–19 who took part in the National Theatre’s inaugural Introduction to Stage Design programme — a seven‑week series of workshops led by professional theatre designers.

Responding to Nigel Williams’ stage adaptation of Lord of the Flies by William Golding, the group explored how design helps shape storytelling on stage. Through weekly masterclasses, they were introduced to the fundamentals of stage design — from researching a text and developing a visual concept, to experimenting with scale, materials and atmosphere.

The exhibition brings together the full creative journey behind their ideas. Visitors can explore scale models, costume drawings, collages and sculptural responses, each offering a fresh and contemporary interpretation of the play. Together, the works reveal how designers think through space, character and mood — and how many different directions a single text can inspire.

There’s also a hands‑on element: interactive models of the National Theatre’s three stages invite visitors of all ages to design through play, experimenting with wooden blocks to imagine their own stage worlds.

With thanks to the course facilitators Sophie Jump, Max Johns, Georgia Lowe, Anthony Lau, Victoria Maytom and Ellie Oldfield, with the assistance of the 2025 Linbury Prize recipients.

Congratulations to the young designers whose creativity and curiosity are at the heart of this show!

When I was interviewed for the post of Course Leader for the @batheatredesignwcaual course at @wimbledonual back in 2013 I gave a presentation entitled Creating Confident Collaborators & Communicators. This is, I feel, still my main focus for our amazing BA Theatre Design students. I’m so looking forward to the 2024/25 Contemporary Dance Design Collaborations at @theplacelondon on 12/13 December & at @mdxunidance on 4/5 December. We’re also collaborating this year with @wimbledonual @ualactingandperformance. Please find ticket links in the @batheatredesignwcaual bio. All welcome! See you there. Thanks to all who work so hard to make our collaborations a success @jump_doctor @tinaafiyanbreiova @woodhouse642 @max.johns.design @stevenkavuma @wcatechnicaltheatre @wca3dlab @jackethanperry @pazzy_73 @wimbledonual & many more! #designfordance #designcollaborations #designforperformance #theatredesign #theplace #contemporarydance

For well over two decades, The Peter Farley Collaborations Project has been a distinguished fixture in London Contemporary Dance School’s performance calendar.
This year’s showcase at @theplacelondon on 12th & 13th December highlights the convergence of creative synergies between BA student choreographers from London Contemporary Dance School and student designers from the BA Theatre Design course @batheatredesignwcaual at Wimbledon College of Arts, UAL @wimbledonual . The result is a diverse collection of pieces, ranging from large-scale constructions to inventive use of the theatre space itself, all indicative of the daring and imaginative cross-pollination of ideas.
As a recent addition in the previous years, we are also partnering with lighting design students from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA). They’re responsible for crafting the atmospheric lighting designs for every piece in our Collaboration performances.
Join us in exploring groundbreaking works that push the boundaries between dancers and designers, as we continue to challenge and redefine these roles in contemporary dance. Ticket link in our bio. These costume designs are by @willoughbybrow who is designing one of the shows. Huge thanks to our amazing project mentors @tinaafiyanbreiova & @jump_doctor

Some images by Senior Lecturer @jump_doctor from the scratch site specific performances created by 2nd years (created in groups in one week). The aim was to get the audience to notice and experience something about the site. And to get the audience to walk through the site without explicitly telling them to do so.
