POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

It’s been a busy start to another school year, and as buried in my work as I’ve been these past couple of months I’ve fortunately found my way into the studio from time to time. Hence the lack of posts (which is probably a good thing).

I’ve been going through a bad bout of saudades from my time in Portugal this past summer. Especially, my time in Lisboa. The trip was meant to cure my saudades of Lisboa but it ended up making it worse.

The city has changed since my last visit 25 years ago. However, the spirit and history remain. The songs that echo through the streets late at night still hold my soul. They call me back.

Prior to my trip, I had planned and written a story about Lisboa. Her people, its history, and the creatures that lurk in the shadows of cobblestone streets.

Here’s a taste.

Good day for inking! Finished another page of the final story for The Gathering Place.

Yet again I worked myself into another panel. I was also told that I drew more hair than I actually have. Let me just say this once… when you’re the one holding the brush you’re the one that gets to make those creative choices. Also, my editor hasn’t noticed so I’ll keep adding hair until she does.

Having some fun in the studio.

Realized when I put this together that I’ve been reading and collecting Punisher comics for 40 years. The stark black and white costume (and view on justice) appealed to a teenaged me. Now that I have a few grey hairs, I see the grey within the character of the Punisher (and the grey areas within justice) that make him that much more appealing. Also realized that I hadn’t drawn him since my high school days.

I know my influences are showing on this one. Just about every illustrator who’s tackled the Punisher over the years and who have influenced me are shining through. There’s no political statement on this one. Just a cool image that would make a great cover.

In the studio today wrapping up another story for The Gathering Place graphic novel. This one for Christiane Pflug took longer than expected due to the level of realism I wanted to elicit a particular emotional response, and to also reflect the artist’s style. I was heavily inspired by the works of Dave McKean when working on these pages.

I still have one more story in me to tell before I wrap up The Gathering Place for good. There’s been a story bubbling in my head for some time now that needs to get down on paper. I better get to it.

I’ve been absent …and with valid reason

Good to be able enough to paint some pages and complete the Maud Lewis story for The Gathering Place graphic novel

Had fun with acrylics and ink/ink wash on these ones

There’s more I could say but honestly, I’d rather get back to the drawing table

Saúde

Thank you to everyone — family, friends, colleagues, and former students — who came out to support my book signing for Daryn’s Drawings at Indigo yesterday!

It was wonderful seeing so many familiar faces and meeting new readers too. For anyone who couldn’t make it, don’t worry — you can still grab a signed copy at Indigo Yorkdale!
