Some details of the connections between our works 🁫 Every day, one more object joined the chain. Today, on the seventh day, all seven are connected into a single sculpture, ending, like a domino line, on an open end. This weekend is your last chance to see the complete chain. For this year’s Dutch Design Award I was asked to design the trophy for the winner. As last year’s winner, I got to pass the baton quite physically, and I used the commission as a small research project into form language: how do you give shape to those meaningless words that float around award shows, like “talent” or “ambition” or “vision”, words that sound empty but somehow hold the reason someone wins? I fine-tuned an image generation model on a small dataset (around 20 images) of my own work and prompted it with those words, like “ceramic talent”. I hand-built the generated forms in clay, and used those recreations (6 shapes, annotated with their prompts) as a new dataset to train a next model. In this way, the model learned a form language, connecting specific aesthetic choices from my practice to those hollow words. “ceramic excellence” became something through the aesthetics of my own ceramic work. From the final model I prompted three trophies: Ceramic Innovation Disruption, Ceramic Vision Talent and Ceramic Disruptive Excellence, Meaningless strings of words, until they were received by this year’s winners” @esmaywagemans @ori_orisun & @junfujisaku Super grateful for the fun commission by @dutchdesignawards and for @corunumceramics for letting me produce this work at the beautiful space. 📸 by @chloealyshea & @anwyn.howarth

Wat een weekend! Jun Fujisaku, Ori Orisun Merhav en Esmay Wagemans wonnen zaterdag de Emerging Talent Award. Gefeliciteerd! First day documented Designing for a space that keeps changing The exhibition space of How We Play, How We Make was designed by @junfujisaku built around two ideas: mobility and temporariness. Over seven days, our objects move, meet and join into a single chain. The space had to move with them. Every element, from the plinths to the lighting and the poster stands, is temporary and mobile: designed to be shifted, rearranged and taken apart as the game unfolds. Like the relay itself, nothing here is fixed for good. 📍 De Fabriek, Eindhoven 🗓 17–25 Oct · 11:00–18:00 · DDW2026 #DDW2026 #HowWePlayHowWeMake #exhibitiondesign

🏆 The winners of Dutch Design Awards 2026 are @junfujisaku , @esmaywagemans , and @ori_orisun! They represent Dutch design at its most radical, opening up new possibilities in uncertain times. Tonight, the awards ceremony hosted at the @piet_hein_eek workshop in Eindhoven celebrated amongst the Dutch design community a wide scope of nominees: 15 critical voices with enormous promise for the field. Emerging Talent Award proudly places them side by side the new generation of Dutch design, at the forefront of contemporary practice. “With uncompromising authorship, these winners do more than ask questions - they open the potential for transformation. Through their critical perspectives and strong visual language, seemingly fixed categories of gender, nature, and the human body begin to shift, demonstrating how design can actively reshape visions of the future and the now. In a landscape of intense pressure, the three winners refuse predetermined commercial tracks. Instead of blending into the field, Jun Fujisaku, Ori Orisun Merhav and Esmay Wagemans, set their own rhythm, claiming the freedom to probe uncomfortable realities and dismantle traditional expectations of the discipline. Their practices stand as autonomous, deeply personal, and ready to go even further.” @iamtextile presided in the jury with @imruh @gabriele_chiave Karin van Gilst @foam_amsterdam @afainadejong @christianluiten @nalden @huzane 🏆The Emerging Talent Award is made possible by @keepaneyefoundation - a longstanding partner championing young talent . . . ♦️ Dutch Design Awards 2026 📸 @bracket___studio

Very welkom to one of the makers of How We Play, How We Make @junfujisaku 🇯🇵 🁫 Relay 2/7: Jun finishes Chai Dienn’s object and passes his own to Jung Hoon Koo. Jun also designed our exhibition space. With a background in architecture, he‘s a hardworking guy who loves rock and roll and football ⚽🎸. He’s also nominated for this year‘s Dutch Design Awards. Fingers crossed! 🤞🏻 Works Photo by @davyy0907 Portrait photo by Natsume Kano 📍 De Fabriek, Eindhoven 🗓 17–25 Oct · 11:00–18:00 · DDW2026 #DDW2026 #HowWePlayHowWeMake #collectibledesign

Very welkom to one of the makers of How We Play, How We Make: @whereischai 🇬🇧🇹🇭 🁫 Relay 1/7: Chai opens the relay, passing the first object to Jun Fujisaku. Chai reinterprets the cultural aesthetics of monumentality into tangible objects, asking what ”human scale“ means, both physically and conceptually. Working mostly in objects and furniture, Chai has a soft spot for flamboyant colours and forms, drawn from the awe and grandeur of religious ideas and architecture. In Chai‘s work, narrative comes before practical function. Photo by @davyy0907 📍 De Fabriek, Eindhoven 🗓 17–25 Oct · 11:00–18:00 · DDW2026 #DDW2026 #HowWePlayHowWeMake#collectibledesign

How We Play, How We Make 17–25 October 2026 · 11:00–18:00 De Fabriek, Baarsstraat 38, Eindhoven · Dutch Design Week 2026 How We Play, How We Make is the second exhibition curated by Absurdity in Making at Dutch Design Week. For Absurdity in Making, the absurd is where making begins: before function, before justification. This exhibition began as a game. Seven Eindhoven designers and artists, Chai Dienn, Jun Fujisaku, Jung Hoon Koo, Thanos Paspaluaris, Shun Chih Chang, Sho Ota and Long Wang Chiang, take part in a relay borrowed from dominoes. Each maker takes an object to ninety per cent and passes it on; the next finishes the last ten per cent before starting their own. Alongside the making, each designer was interviewed, documenting the thinking behind every joint. Through these conversations, they shared perspectives, reflections and insights with one another. Over seven days, the objects join one by one into a single sculpture, ending, like a domino line, on an open end. How We Play, How We Make shows both sides of that process: the objects, and the conversations that shaped them.
