Chris Kaba was 24 years old and unarmed when a Metropolitan Police officer shot him in the head through a car windscreen in Streatham, south London, in September 2022.

Police stopped the Audi he was driving because it had been linked to a shooting the previous night. It was not registered to Chris, and officers did not know who was driving when they began following it. That link was a reason to investigate, not an automatic justification for taking his life.

The officer said he feared Chris would run over his colleagues as he tried to drive out of the stop. But prosecutors challenged that explanation, arguing that Chris’s car was stationary and boxed in, with no immediate threat to anyone’s life when the shot was fired.

For many Black people, this raises a painful question about how quickly we are perceived as threats. A police stop should not become a death sentence. Chris deserved to live, and his family deserve answers and accountability.

@justiceforchriskaba are calling on the public to stand alongside them and other families across the UK whose loved ones have died at the hands of the state. Join the annual @uffcampaign procession at Trafalgar Square at 12pm on Saturday 31 October.

In 2022, I ran the London Marathon in protest against police brutality towards the Black community following the then-recent death of Chris Kaba.

The community’s struggle for the truth.

It’s been four years since Chris Kaba’s death, and the family still needs answers. They want a full inquest into Chris Kaba’s death.

Every time we turn on the news, we hope that another young Black man’s life is not taken too soon.

The Metropolitan Police has made submissions to the coroner that an inquest into the death of Chris Kaba should not be resumed.

At a hearing at Southwark Coroner’s Court on Thursday, 1 October the Met outlined that the four questions considered by a coronial process have been answered completely by a criminal trial and an investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner James Harman said:

“The circumstances around Chris Kaba’s death have already been fully established during the independent IOPC investigation and criminal trial.

“In particular, the actions of officer NX121 have been comprehensively examined and cross-examined.

"After four years of unimaginable stress and uncertainty for the officer and his family, the facts of what happened are known and he has been cleared of any wrongdoing"

“While our thoughts remain with Mr Kaba’s family for their loss, resuming the inquest and duplicating the investigations that have already taken place is not in the public interest."

Saturday at the @justiceforchriskaba event.

Chris Kaba was shot in the head and murdered in 2022 by Met police officer Martyn Blake.

Blake was given a promotion and was never held accountable for this racist murder.

Misinformation is being vindictively spread about this state killing, and in fact, all state killings.

Remember the police, the mainstream media and the judiciary system work together to protect each other from accountability even when cops act as judge, jury and executioner.

Here, Susan Alexander explains how her son Azelle Rodney was killed by the police in 2005.

Rodney was shot six times in his face, head, neck and chest.

In July 2013, a public inquiry found that Anthony Long, the Specialist Firearms Officer who fired the fatal shots, had "no lawful justification" for killing Rodney.

However, the police officer involved in the killing has ever been held accountable for their actions.

Here, Marcia Rigg explains how her brother Sean Rigg was killed by the police in 2008.

Rigg was handcuffed and restrained in a prone, face down position as officers leant on him for eight minutes causing him to suffocate.

He was then placed face down with his legs bent behind him in the caged rear section of a police van and transported to Brixton police station.

In August 2012, an inquest jury at Southwark Coroner's Court concluded that the police had used "unsuitable and unnecessary force" on Rigg, that officers failed to uphold his basic rights and that the failings of the police "more than minimally" contributed to his death.

The inquest highlighted serious shortfalls in the IPCC's investigation, while South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust was also criticised for failing to organise a mental health assessment for Rigg and failing to ensure that he took his medication.

However, no police officer involved in the killing has ever been held accountable for their actions.

Tomorrow marks four years since 24-year-old Chris Kaba was shot in the head and killed by Metropolitan Police firearms officer Martyn Blake. Chris was unarmed. Police did not know who was driving the car they stopped.

Four years later, Blake has been acquitted, the misconduct case against him has been abandoned, and he has been promoted. Meanwhile, Chris has repeatedly been put on trial for his own death.

An acquittal does not mean the killing was justified. Black people should not have to be “perfect victims” to deserve justice, dignity and accountability.

I wrote this poem as part of the @poeticunity Protest Poetry Project. It’s time for us as a creative community to use our gifts to support the movement for police accountability.
