Bittersweet news: It’s my last day at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. For my next adventure, I’ll be moving to DC as a freelancer to chase my dreams of anxiety and instability.

But truly, the last 4.5 years have been some of the most transformative in my life. I forever owe my manager Sandra Brown and AJC leadership for taking a chance on me when I had little experience and was just finding my footing as a photojournalist.

Sandra showed me what strong leadership and advocacy for visuals looks like. My colleagues Natrice Miller, Hyosub Shin, Bob Andres, Miguel Martinez, Jason Getz, Steve Schaefer, Curtis Compton, John Spink, and Bita Honarvar taught me so much about how to be a photojournalist. Additionally, the larger photojournalism community in Atlanta has been incredibly supportive.

I’m grateful to all the reporters who were the best collaborators. And I’m grateful to all of the people who allowed me to be with them in good and bad times, to document meaningful and important stories.

I’m embarking on this new chapter because as I grow older I want to take some risks and see where life takes me. As my cranky old journalism professor Judith Crist used to say (while delivering scathing criticism), “Onward and upward.”

I’ll be heading to DC in November. Meanwhile, here are some pictures in which my hair and beard length fluctuate wildly.

In 2000, women were 4% of the United States veteran population. Federal government forecasts project their numbers to hit nearly 20% by 2040. Georgia is at the center of this demographic shift. The state has among the most women veterans in the nation.

It’s a population at high risk for posttraumatic stress disorder or PTSD, research from the Dept. of Veterans Affairs shows.

The health risks are even higher for veterans during pregnancy and postpartum -- PTSD increases the chances for potentially life-threatening complications, including preterm birth, preeclampsia and gestational diabetes, according to the VA.

Women veterans are also many times more likely than men to have experienced military sexual trauma during their service, VA data show.

Advocates behind a monthly peer group at American Legion Post 66 are working to connect women veterans living with trauma to medical and mental health services, educational resources and emotional support.

And, organizers say part of its magic is bringing together veterans of all ages, backgrounds and military service histories.
