T1D is a part of my story, but it won’t write the ending.
So much more led up to this race than meets the eye!
Here’s how I managed during my first Hyrox:

1. Sugar on standby! Tested all kinds of gels and easily grab-able fast acting sugar to see what would react best with my system! Carried a fanny pack with 3 gels, a baggie of Nerds Gummy clusters, and some starbursts for my partner!

2. Diligent monitoring before and after. Was up all night (unfortunately) panicking and checking my CGM for patterns and where I thought the trajectory would go. Lo and behold I crashed the morning of the race HARD so I had to really extra monitor leading up the hours before.

3. PROTEIN. Yes carb up before your race, but for me and my system, PROTEIN is what helps keep my sugars up once I come up from a low. Protein was priority, doesn’t matter how it affects the tummy.

4. Controversially? Did NOT alter my long acting dosage. An idea I saw online for marathon runners was to lower the long acting insulin dosage. Personally, my sugars tend to SPIKE with adrenaline, so I consciously did not alter my long acting dose prior.

5. TAPED DOWN THAT DAMN CGM. Bruh. Skin tac, skin glue, another layer of skin tac, sensor, skin tac, sensor bandage. Ain’t no way I was gonna have that thing fly off in the course.

6. Have my people 💕 My girlie running beside me was honestly just as concerned as I was (if not MORE) about what to do in case of crisis low. I also had my people watching hold onto my phone so I could scan IMMEDIATELY after leaving the finish platform. Could not do it without them. Period.

7. Wore my NLD scars out loud and proud. We decided to wear shorts, and I had a full menty b deciding if I wanted everyone watching to speculate on what my shin marks were from, which spiraled into feeling self conscious about them, and then further into my scar tissue lumps, bruises and even my CGM. Then decided to get over myself and do it anyways 🤣

I wish I could go back in time and tell my parents at the hospital who were told their daughter would not be able to participate in sports or extra curricular activities 💕
