Spinal Cord. ❤️

Some plays entertain you. Some amaze you.

And then there are plays that quietly open a door you didn’t know still existed.

Last night, we watched Oxygen Theatre Company’s Spinal Cord. Or perhaps, our Deepettan’s Spinal Cord.

“We” was Rajeev, Shinod and I. Three members of the Kaduva gang.

31 years ago, we were among the first guinea pigs of Deepan Shivaraman. Along with Jyotishettan, Bijuettan, Anilettan and that incredible School of Drama gang, they shaped us in ways we probably understood only yesterday.

When I hugged Deepettan after the show, it wasn’t just a hug.

It was 31 years collapsing into a few silent seconds.

Kerala Varma came rushing back. The whole campus becoming our stage. Rehearsals stretching into the night. Arguments about theatre and life. Laughter born even from our poverty—we barely had money to feed ourselves, let alone our directors!

Looking back, we had almost nothing. Yet somehow, we possessed everything.

Spinal Cord was breathtaking—the performances, haunting music, immersive experience and extraordinary scenography. Watching Josettan and Rajettan was a privilege.

But the most powerful performance was perhaps inside us.

Every scene unlocked a memory. Every light illuminated another face. Every silence carried someone who should have been there.

The presence of legends.
The absence of Gopalettan.
The aching void of Anilettan.

We walked out remembering a life where friendship was richer than money, art mattered more than success, and dreams were bigger than our pockets.

Perhaps that’s theatre’s greatest gift.

It takes you home—to a version of yourself you thought you had left behind.

Thank you, Deepettan. For Spinal Cord. For 31 years ago. And for last night.

Somewhere inside us, the Kaduva gang is still rehearsing under the trees of Kerala Varma. ❤️
