When we gather on Yom Kippur to beat our chests for our sins, we stand before God as humans created in the divine image, not only as Jews. Our obligation to accept responsibility for the sins of our fellow humans against one another, the planet, and God extends beyond our Jewishness. When we atone for the genocide in Gaza, we do so not because a Jewish state is committing it, but because it is happening at all.

How do we atone for a genocide still unfolding? For a genocide denied?

We honor the dead. We demand remembrance. We cry out as our ancestors did, awakening the Source of Life from sleep or inattention or distraction. We lift up the memories of the ones who have been killed - their loves, their homes, their dreams, their work, their words.

We recommit to fight for the living. We refuse to be complicit or complacent. We will not be silent or numb. We recommit, in the presence of sacred community, to break the chains of oppression in our time, not only with prayer and intention, but through powerful action and consistent solidarity.

One way that the High Holy Days invite us to do that is by giving tzedakah, a practice of material solidarity toward collective safety and freedom for all people.

Please join us and be part of the High Holy Days Tzedakah Campaign that aims to raise $180,000 to keep the Gaza Soup Kitchen running for the duration of the High Holy Days. This will help to provide nourishing meals, essential supplies, water, and dignity to families in Gaza who are facing hunger, displacement, and despair.

So far, we have together raised $84,000. Gratitude to everyone who has already donated.

Please contribute and pass it on to three friends today.

Together we can help fight starvation in Gaza.

In 2026/5786, the starvation crisis in Gaza has only worsened.

The Israeli government introduced new requirements
for international aid organizations, which caused many to greatly reduce or cease operations in Gaza. This made smaller groups like the Gaza Soup Kitchen more crucial than ever.

Let’s together raise $180,000 to keep the Gaza Soup Kitchen running for the duration of the High Holy Days.

So far we’ve raised $62,000 toward our goal of $180,000

In 5786, the starvation crisis in Gaza has only worsened as the Israeli government introduced new requirements for international aid organizations, which caused many international aid organizations to greatly reduce or cease operations in Gaza. This made smaller groups like the Gaza Soup Kitchen more crucial than ever.

The High Holy Day season invites us to give tzedakah, a practice of solidarity toward collective safety and freedom for all people.

Over the past few years, Jews for Food Aid for People in Gaza developed a strong relationship of responsibility with the Gaza Soup Kitchen. We have learned for them that feeding thousands of people a day in the middle of unimaginable loss isn’t just logistics; it is thousands of daily acts of refusal to let despair win. The work of the Gaza Soup Kitchen is solidarity and love expressed as a hot plate of food, a gesture that says: you are seen, you are loved, and you are not forgotten.

The cost of the Gaza Soup Kitchen’s operations is $15,000 per day to run seven kitchens throughout Gaza. This Tzedakah Campaign seeks to raise $180,000 which will allow the Gaza Soup Kitchen to continue their operations during the aseret yimei teshuvah, the ten days of repentance from Rosh HaShannah to Yom Kippur, helping to provide nourishing meals, essential supplies, water, and dignity to families in Gaza who are facing hunger, displacement, and despair.

May your generosity be a source of blessing for you and your loved ones and may you be inscribed in the Book of Life for a year of peace, wholeness, and compassion.

This year has been harrowing - neighbors being kidnapped from our streets in the U.S., ongoing genocide in Gaza, ethnic cleansing in the West Bank, war in Lebanon and Iran. Violence and uncertainty prevails. And, there is an incredible sea change taking place in everyday people’s refusal of authoritarianism and business as usual. This High Holidays, find a place to gather and pray that will support you to engage in sacred repair and transformation toward liberation for all people, including Palestinians.

This Open Communities High Holiday directory lists dozens of Jewish communities (congregations, havurahs, minyans), all of them eager to warmly welcome you, exactly as you are. These services represent a range of religious denominations and approaches to Israel/Palestine; some are affiliated with major Jewish movements and some are independent; some have large clergy teams and some are lay-led; some hold specific perspectives on Zionism and anti-Zionism and some have a range of progressive political orientations. We hope that the variety of offerings – close to home and international, in-person and virtual – will allow you to connect with services that suit your spiritual needs.

We are continuing our partnership with the Jews for Food Aid for People in Gaza campaign and the Gaza Soup Kitchen and are encouraging everyone to give tzedakah this High Holidays to feed Palestinians in Gaza. Our goal is to raise $180,000 this High Holiday season through our collective efforts. The cost of the Gaza Soup Kitchen’s operations is $15,000 per day to run seven kitchens throughout Gaza. Together we can ensure that the kitchens are functional every day of aseret yimei teshuvah, the ten days of repentance.

G’mar chatima tova — may we all be inscribed for life.

On Tisha B’Av, the Jewish day of mourning commemorating tragedies that befell Jewish communities across centuries, Jewish community members gathered in seven U.S. cities - Boston, Chicago, Denver, Durham, Kansas City, Philadelphia, and Seattle - to open our hearts to grief for Israel’s genocide of Palestinians in Gaza, ethnic cleansing in the West Bank, and horrific state violence that imperils the sanctity of human life.

This year, our communal mourning of the destruction of Jerusalem this Tisha B’Av is the same week that Israeli settlers attacked a mosque in Masafer Yatta, setting it on fire along with Palestinian homes.

Inspired by the invitation of our tradition to commemorate Jewish communal losses, our hearts turned to contemporary tragedies about which we have communal grief and accountability. We know that our grief is incomplete if it does not include the loss of Palestinian life and livelihood, and Palestinian sacred spaces.

These coordinated gatherings brought Tisha B’Av rituals into the streets with traditional expressions of grief: fasting, chanting Eicha (Lamentations), and kinnot (mournful liturgical lamentations), as public expressions of mourning and solidarity.
Tisha B’Av reminds us of the inviolable dignity of all human life. Through public ritual, participants connected Jewish history with present-day calls to protect human life. We grieved and built our collective courage to organize to end state violence in Gaza and the West Bank, and to pursue a future rooted in justice and dignity for all people.

Our grief must inspire us to take urgent action. We rose in solidarity with Palestinians facing harrowing violence at the hands of the Israeli military with pivotal support from the U.S. government.

We called upon our political leaders to stop U.S. support for Israel’s widespread violence by passing Block the Bombs legislation. We reinvigorated our commitments to fighting for Palestinian freedom and a thriving future for all.

Today is Rosh Chodesh Av, the first day of the month of Av, the saddest month in the Jewish calendar. Tisha B'av is the most solemn day of Av, where we traditionally fast and mourn the destruction of the second temple. This year we grieve not just historical destruction but contemporary as well - the ongoing genocide in Gaza caused by Israel and the U.S. and the violent expansion of ethnic cleansing in the West Bank. Join us in one of seven cites across the U.S. where together, we will turn our grief into urgent action.

Tisha B’Av is a day of mourning. This year, we mourn with our eyes open.

Today is the 17th day of the month of Tammuz, marking the beginning of a structured period of mourning, the ‘Three Weeks’ leading up to Tisha B’Av, the 9th day of the month of Av, commemorating the destruction of the Temples in Jerusalem and other historic tragedies.

The Three Weeks remind us that grief is crushing if it is not shared, that we must not carry the weight of tragedy alone, that we must not meet the urgency of the destruction with isolation and inaction. In this moment of moral reckoning with the desecration of human life taking place all over the world, we must grieve for the tragedies inflicted on the Palestinian people by Israel and the U.S. We must gather in defence of human life.

This year, we refuse to allow our grief to calcify into inaction, instead, we will use ritual action to catalyze our movement for freedom. Join us on Tisha B’Av, July 22-23 as we gather in seven different cities in the US to hold Tisha B’Av rituals in the streets. LINK IN BIO.

The US-Israel war on Iran threatens everyone in its path. Citing wartime security needs, the Israeli government has again closed all the borders of Gaza, including for humanitarian aid. Food prices are skyrocketing because of the closing of the Rafah border. This is exacerbating the food scarcity and starvation crisis in Gaza.

Tzedakah is a practice of solidarity that leads us to collective safety and freedom for all people, binds ourselves to others, and brings us closer to a world redeemed.

As Passover nears we are reminded of the Aramaic words that open the maggid, storytelling, section of the Passover seder: Kol dichfin yeitei v’yeichol “may all who are hungry come and eat.” These words are meant to be a call to share both sustenance and freedom.

To make those words real this Passover, together, let’s raise $36,000 for @gazasoupkitchen
