Meet our August speaker, @kahiching ✨

Kahi Ching is a Honolulu-born painter and sculptor who has spent over 35 years creating work that refuses to stay in one lane. Painting, ceramics, wood, metal, mixed media — he’s worked in all of it, and he’s not done yet. His work was featured in the Hawaiʻi Triennial 2025 and selected for the State’s permanent collection.

This month, under the theme Palm, he’s bringing that whole journey to our stage.

Free, open to everyone, and the perfect way to start a Friday morning.

Join us in celebrating Nā ʻIli o Kahe, a new mural by artists Meleanna Aluli Meyer and Solomon Enos at Kahe Point.

Saturday, June 13
12:00-2:00 pm
Kahe Point Beach Park
RSVP Requested. Link in Bio.

The program will begin with cultural protocol, followed by conversation, food, music, and community gathering. The public is invited to come together in reflection, connection, and celebration.

Located at Kahe Point, a site popular with divers, snorkelers, and locals alike, and passed by thousands of commuters each day, Nā ʻIli o Kahe reconnects the place to the significance of the five ʻili (subdivisions) associated with the area.

Created in collaboration with more than thirty community members, this mural is grounded in shared stewardship and kuleana-based pedagogy. Using the form of a ʻupena (net), the design symbolizes the gathering of people and resources.

Mahalo to our storytellers Kimo Keaulana and Ulukoa Duhaylonsod, guest artist Eric Enos and Kahi Ching, and to the dedicated community painters and partners from Ka‘Ohana Enos, Ka‘ala Farms, MA‘O Organic Farms, and LCC Wai‘anae moku.

‘O Ka Wai Mai: from Lāhaina to the Litani is on view now until February 18 @theartgalleryuhmanoa ! So many hands, hearts, minds and voices went into this exhibition that was 14 months in the making.

Thanks to the brilliant artists @reembassous @kahiching @thepuamohalas and poets including my mom @nejameadele, Brandy Nālani McDougall, and Irish poet Geraldine Mills for lending their words to this conversation about land, water and people.

My deepest gratitude to @jaimey_faris who helped me curate this show and especially @thepuamohalas for her unwavering dedication and for bringing Pūlama Collier’s voice to bless our space. This was the hardest project I’ve ever undertaken and I’m so proud to be in the company of this tour de force.
