“The Death of Misogyny” powerful piece by @kai_sanna

Words from the artist:

It is a piece about love and fear, reawakening and questioning, vulnerability and protection. It’s about the things we inherit, the things we unlearn, and the parts of ourselves we rediscover during that whole process.

The more I worked on this piece, the more I realised there may never be just one way to understand it, and perhaps that’s the point.

"Death of Misogyny" is a painting by @kai_sanna that depicts a visual deconstruction of misogynistic views of women.

Let's talk about it!

There are three forms staged in a natural environment, but it's what they represent and how they are presented that's astounding. The unity of three creates a wholesome feel and focus in the painting, and each of these women of a richer brown shade. When society thinks of misogyny, so many people (if they do care about women) run to the defense of women with lighter or whiter skin, whereas darker women are left to fend for themselves. And, when they do so to survive, they are "angry" or "difficult."

In the painting, the stance of each woman is erect and proud. They do not fear, nor are they ashamed of the power they possess. What's more, these women, seemingly in a traditional setting, are using industrial weaponry (guns) against their enemies, though the enemy isn't depicted. For Black women, there are too many enemies to count, unfortunately. But, intentionally omit the enemy from the picture is to void them of attention to take away focus from the women. And, for these women to use an enemies' weapon against them is revolutionary. Even if the identity of these women are unknown, their appearance demands respect.

There's also much to be said about the adornment on these women. Their clothing appears to be woven and saturated with bright colors - both are textile signatures and nods to their culture and identity.

What I find most profound is their hair. Black hair being policed aside, these styles can be seen in much of modern Afrofuturistic themes, however, few realize that there is nothing "new" about these styles. These styles speak of identity, status, and history - not a simple fashion statement.

With the ram as a part of the scene (an animal known to take charge) it adds messaging to the piece. The women are not boastful or proud like lions nor meek like mice. The are defensive and stand their ground when threatened and are often underestimated. It's not until it's too late that their fierceness is realized.

A mindful art experience to slow down and see.

When we pause, the world opens. Colours shift, light deepens, and even the smallest details reveal themselves. Painting becomes less about the final image and more about the act of noticing.
In this workshop, we’ll explore oil painting as a practice of observation and presence. We’ll create space to move, breathe, reflect, and simply be with what unfolds on the canvas.

Two ways to join us:
🔸 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝟭 𝗣𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗮𝗴𝗲: A daytime workshop in yoga and mindful oil painting.
🔸 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝟭 & 𝟮 𝗣𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗮𝗴𝗲: Includes Day 1 workshop + an evening film screening + morning yoga + a second-day expansion session on Colour Theory.

Want to stay the night? 🌌
Accommodation options are also available through the booking form for those who’d like the full retreat experience.

This event isn’t about perfection or skill, it’s about curiosity, patience, and the beauty of slowing down.

Facilitated by: @kai_sanna & @jordywhy

A little glimpse into Mess as Method:
a day of slowing down, tuning in, and creating without pressure.

We began with grounding yoga, reflected through writing, explored the space through visual hunting, and finally, let our hands run wild across large shared canvases. 🎨 🖼️

Delicious homemade snacks kept us nourished in between, and we ended the day with warm cocoa and conversations by the fire. 🔥

Thank you to everyone who showed up with curiosity and open hearts. We can’t wait to do it again. ✨
