You were never meant to make yourself smaller just to make someone else comfortable.

Your light is not the problem.

Your God is my God is your God.

What a perspective to look at eh? Please listen to this experience of mine with an open heart, and I hope we both can see it through the same lenses.

Books open our minds to the world, to learning new things, and spending time reading is one of the best gifts you can give yourself.

#BhagavadGita
#TheFivePeopleYouMeetinHeaven
#ConversationsWithGod
#TheSubtleArtofNotGivingaF

Did a thing! First time taking part in the IHH Sky Race at Merdeka 118.

Would do it again next year just for the (hope better) view 😅

Imagine the view if it wasn’t hazy

"We are mountain women"
Graphite pencil on Annapurna topographic map

I recently trekked the Annapurna range in Nepal with 16 amazing women. Many of them did this trek for deeply personal reasons, but I made no pretense that I wanted to trek with women as a feminist act.

I usually hike alone. When I do, the one most common reaction, mostly from men, is how brave I am. Men are also more likely to provide unsolicited hiking instructions – telling me I needed to rest when I wasn’t tired, saying I was using my trekking poles wrong, and bizarrely, giving me permission to slow down as though I was seeking it.

During this Annapurna trek, one man I was passing at a particularly tough ascend had the gall and audacity to instruct me to show him my face! Even in the backcountry of Nepal, a man still felt that my appearance was public property, that he was entitled to my pleasant reaction to his presence.

So naturally, I see women trekking as a feminist act.

In addition to being paternalistic and condescending, people’s incredulity at women hiking alone – but not at a man for doing the same – reinforces the false narrative that women do not belong in the outdoors – especially not alone. It also feeds into the highly problematic cultural belief that women cannot undertake certain activities alone. It is what builds the “participation gap”, ie the societal and cultural biases against women’s participation in any number of activities – including outdoor activities.

Of course, there are risks associated with spending time in nature – these affect everyone equally. (And referencing the ‘Bear Vs Man’ debate, the perceived threat to most women while alone in the woods are usually men themselves.)

Hiking is a feminist act. It is about women’s self care, about creating a space where everyone feels equal and included. It is about defying oppressive patriarchal standards, stereotypes, and influence. It is about building our collective feminist resilience and power.

There is defiance and subversion and disobedience and recalcitrance in putting on my hiking boots and stepping on a mountain path.

Of course hiking is a feminist act 💪
