Having a love for serving others is something I want to instill deeply into my 4 children. I think these days it’s so easy to get sucked into our own little bubble and ignore everything and everyone around us. And that’s when life is lonely for everyone!
This whole summer we dedicated to serving others and we finished it off with delivering cake jars inspired by @kamibratten’s book Feed Your Neighbor to a bunch of friends!
My kids helped me come up with a list of people to bring them to and helped me assemble the cake jars as well.
They had so much fun & got another experience of seeing how something simple was able to brighten someone’s day and make them feel good inside too.
If you have the thought to go drop by a treat or a large soda or double a meal for someone else, do it! Act on that prompting because you have no idea what could’ve possible gone wrong in their day that could use a little pick me up! I promise you won’t regret it and they will appreciate it so much🩷

Tonight, Monday, July 6 at 7pm, we’re delighted to welcome Kami Bratten (Gayle’s former @aulamfa student!) and her giftable new cookbook, Feed Your Neighbor: Recipes for Delivering Love and Healing, which explores food as a simple yet powerful way to strengthen communities and relationships. The book focuses on meals designed specifically for giving—recipes that are nourishing, simple, and easily transportable, and offers tips on transport and advice on navigating sometimes uncomfortable social dynamics that come with feeding others.

There may be a bite or two from the book. Feel free to bring your own dish to share! 💖

When we opened Secret World Books, one of our intentions was to bring healing to the community. We wanted to provide a space that could reframe people’s relationship with downtown Highland Park, a space that could bring connection and joy to a block that holds so many traumatic memories. As we approach the 4th anniversary of the horrific events of 2022, we want to remind you Secret World Books is a safe space to sit and breathe, a safe space to be your full self, whatever you’re feeling.

We’re grateful to be able to provide two gatherings that center healing and community in the next few days.

On the 4th, from 10-4, you can stop in to create your own grounding kit, make a bookmark, meet Cali the service dog, and learn more about the book she inspired after July 4, 2022, A Dog Story: Misty’s Healing Power. Author Craig Scalise and trauma informed counselor Josh Novick will be on hand to share stories, answer questions, and create safe space for community care.

Monday, July 6 at 7pm, we’re so happy to welcome Kami Bratten (yet another of Gayle’s former students!) and her giftable new cookbook, Feed Your Neighbor: Recipes for Delivering Love and Healing, which explores food as a simple yet powerful way to strengthen communities and relationships. We’re grateful for how our community helped one another in 2022, and love that this event can encourage us to continue to nourish one another!
