TEXTILE Cloth and Culture: Special Edition

Decentering Bodies: FACE X TEXTILE Cloth and Culture

I am excited to announce that I will be working on this collaborative special edition for TEXTILE: Cloth and Culture Journal

DETAILS and links are in my Bio or DM for further information and scope of submissions. @_weareface @kandhola_max @faceculturalist

We are inviting researchers, academics, artist and designers to contribute to a special edition for TEXTILE: Cloth and Culture Journal

Callout: 2000 – 5000, word essay to include images. Up to Ten images per essay by 18.00 BST, April 30th 2025, all essays will be peer reviewed – email: davina.hawthorne@dmu.ac.uk

“Decentering Bodies” is a framework that critiques and challenges dominant cultural ideology, particularly Eurocentric beauty ideals, while advocating for the psychological and social empowerment of historically marginalized communities. It calls for decolonizing beauty standards to foster a more inclusive narrative that accounts for the ways race, class, gender, and colonial histories shape identity and self-perception. The approach ultimately seeks a radical redefinition of beauty and identity. Aligned with this framework, we are interested in articles that focus on research in textiles, particularly those that examine the broader cultural and social roles textiles play. These articles would contribute to an academic forum that explores how textiles intersect with identity and empowerment, framed within a decolonized and inclusive perspective for all those who share a multifaceted view of textiles within an expanded field.

As part of #Black365, March 2024 sees the launch of FACE X HORNIMAN: online Hair Stories exhibition. @_weareface and @hornimanmuseumgardens explores and celebrates the influence, importance and personal narratives attached to hair from Black, Brown and Asian perspectives within the UK.

Both students and academics explore the complex relationship between hair and identity, revealing the importance of generational traditions in different communities and the power of creative invention. The visual and written chronicles that emerge are political, many of them highlighting the continued presence of racial discrimination in relation to hair as well as documenting resistance and creativity in spite of and in response to this.

This will be the first time this online exhibition is shown within a physical space, and is a collaborative exhibition between the @unikentlive (University of Kent), FACE and the Horniman Museum. The original online exhibition, which was available via https://www.weareface.uk and https://www.horniman.ac.uk.

The exhibition has been curated by our very own Fashion designer and Senior Lecturer @davinahawthorne2017 @ma_fashionandtextiles_dmu and Photographer and Associate Professor @kandhola_max @ntuart, both council members of FACE

@fcsdmu are proud to celebrate the work from final year student @precious_tamanji is being showcased until July 2024.
Her work, titled “Whitewashed” explores A Visual Journey of Self-Discovery’. Challenging societal norms, this exploration unravels the unwritten rules of Black identity and delves into how our environment profoundly shapes the path of self-discovery and identity.

Have you checked out the SeeMyAcademicFACE Survey?

We are encouraging everyone to complete and/or pass it on to someone they know. And no, you don't have to be Black or Brown to fill out the survey.

The aim of this study is to capture the everyday experience of educators including technicians and support staff regardless of qualifications and/or position, in Higher Education Art and Design.

The information gathered from both minoritised and non minoritised educators, technicians and support staff will support drives for better recruitment, retention and progression of minoritised educators by white institutions.

This study is hosted and initiated by Fashion Academics Creating Equality (FACE) and sponsored by Kingston School of Art (KSA) EDI Race and Ethnicity group.

URL link to survey is in our bio above.

Thank you!
