Working to eradicate gender-based violence through survivor-centered services, education, and outreach to Asian American communities & beyond

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Asian Americans Advancing Justice | Chicago convened our Pan-Asian Voter Empowerment (PAVE) coalition partners for a retreat to reflect on our collective goals and align on the priorities we want to advance together.

This retreat was an opportunity to reflect on where we can have the greatest collective impact and how we can turn our shared priorities into action. As we prepare for the 2027 spring legislative session, we’re focused on supporting critical services for Asian Americans, increasing civic engagement, advancing policy change, and building toward a successful 2027 Asian American Action Day.

We look forward to continuing this work together to build power and advocate for the needs of Asian American communities.

18 days to go found us at the Korean American Bar Association of Chicago’s annual gala. This year’s theme was 잔치 (janchi), meaning celebratory feast. This year, I was honored to present checks to the three KABA scholarship recipients. As a past scholarship winner, I know how important that recognition is, both financially and to morale, and I was honored to recognize our community’s next generation.

KABA’s Community Service Award went to my friend Ji-Hye Kim, recognizing her incredible work with @kanwinchicago and the amazing support services they provide to survivors of domestic violence and intimate partner abuse.

The company, the festive mood, and the dancing ahjummas made for a fantastic evening celebrating our community!

Our Election Day advent calendar brought us another teddy bear friend, decked out in a blue sweater!

Save the Date for Advancing Justice | Chicago and the Pan-Asian Voter Empowerment Coalition's quad-annual Chicago Mayoral Candidate Forum!

Our 2027 Mayoral Candidate Forum will take place on Saturday, January 30th, 2027, from 1-3pm pm at the Chicago History Museum's McCormick Theater! Doors open at 12:45pm.

This Forum is an opportunity to hear from candidates running for Chicago Mayor this February! Asian Americans are the fastest growing racial demographic in Chicago and the PAVE Coalition’s Mayoral Candidate Forum allows us to learn about candidate responses to key issues affecting Asian American communities, such as language justice, accessible housing, and immigration.

The Pan-Asian Voter Empowerment (PAVE) Coalition consists of 19 Asian American advocacy and direct service organizations in the Chicagoland area. Founded in 2011, the PAVE Coalition focuses on increasing voter turnout and civic participation among Asian Americans and improving the lives of Asian Americans through advocacy and policy change.

Why do you support the RIFL Act? On Advocacy Day in Springfield, Leah talked about why young people are vital to this movement. Let’s get this passed!

On May 6, we brought hundreds of Asian Americans to Springfield to lobby lawmakers to Protect Our Futures! Progressive revenue was a major PAVE priority as we figure out ways to tax the rich and fund our communities and the critical programs and services we rely on, and because of the advocacy of so many grassroots leaders, the Illinois General Assembly passed a tax on digital ads! 💰🎉

We also supported our coalition partners on critical funding priorities, protecting funding for health benefits for our seniors, immigrant services, and the Access to Justice program.

While we’re disappointed that the General Assembly didn’t include funding to expand K-12 inclusive history implementation or to begin providing Halal and Kosher meals in public schools, we know that sharing our stories and experiences helped move the needle.

If you’re interested in joining the fight, be sure to join us in Springfield next year for Asian American Action Day 2027 and sign up for our newsletter (link in bio) to keep up to date as we continue advocating for policies and funding that Protect Our Futures!

Our MODU Gala would not be possible without the generosity of sponsors who support HANA's mission to uplift Korean, Asian American, and multiethnic immigrant communities in the Chicago area.

Swipe to see our amazing sponsors, Host Committee members, and in-kind donors who help sustain this annual community event.

There's still time to buy tickets to the gala! Every ticket or donation helps HANA continue its vital services to immigrant families in Chicago and the northwest suburbs.

Thank you!

I first met Ji Hye many years ago, when I accepted the court case of a KAN-WIN client - a Korean woman experiencing domestic violence/divorce - and Ji Hye was the DV advocate/interpreter who helped me provide the client with wraparound services. I’m grateful to Chair @debconroy4dupage and my county board colleagues for the opportunity to recognize and present an AANHPI proclamation to now Executive Director Ji Hye Kim and @kanwinchicago, an organization founded by a group of Korean immigrant women to eradicate gender-based violence in the Korean and Asian community. For AANHPI Heritage Month, I wanted to highlight an organization that not only uplifts the Asian American community, but also reminds us that behind the “model minority” myth are real people who need support, protection, and access to services. KAN-WIN’s work ensures Asian survivors are seen, heard and empowered. #aanhpi #aapiheritagemonth #kanwinchicago #aanhpiheritagemonth

Pocha flowed, the anju delighted, the records were on point, and the room stayed abuzz. In other words, we had a blast.

Big shouts to @chefbeverlykim and the entire Parachute HiFi team for collaborating with us and making Pocha Night happen, and to everyone who came through and shared good hangs.

Together we raised $800 for KAN-WIN to support their vital work. ❤️
