Happy Black Maternal Health Week!

This week is so near and dear to my heart. Supporting women, especially black women, through labor is my favorite thing! It’s the breath of relief from anxiety, the smile that I get, or even the way that we greet one another when they see me entering their rooms. To have someone on your care team that looks like you AND understand you is important.

It’s no secret that black women are statistically at an alarmingly higher rate of dying during childbirth and in the postpartum period than white women. There are several factors that are involved including systemic racism, implicit bias, the lack of cultural competence, and variations in quality healthcare. What’s even more alarming is that 80% of deaths that occur are preventable!

This week is a week of awareness aimed to amplify and advocate for the voices of black mothers.

Together — we can get involved and uplift mamas by:

• Identifying and addressing implicit biases
• Empowering women to be in control of their care by asking questions
• Educating and empowering women to include a doula in their journey
• Support mamas who haven’t been heard
• Identifying and addressing social disparities such as food insecurity, transportation access, unstable housing, substance use, violence, and racial inequality

Black women should go home with their babies, safely. Black women should be free from trauma throughout their birthing journeys. Black women should be heard and believed when voicing concerns.
