Encaustic on Panel
18 x 18 x 1 5/8 in

Artist Statment:
Encaustic painting is only fluid when it’s hot. It cools almost immediately. The torch, or heat gun can be used to liquidy once more, but it’s really important to learn to control the heat, otherwise you end up with a muddy puddle.

On opening night, the exhibition dazzled as the community lined the streets, stood in a crowded room, and, having made their pilgrimage to the top of Canyon Road, witnessed a celebration of women in the arts at Turner Carroll Gallery. Last night was a wrap to “New City of Ladies!” Congratulations to all!

The night before Karine Swenson was born, her mother was on top of the garage, painting the exterior of their house. Maybe that is why she became an artist? One thing is certain, Swenson feels the most at peace when she is either in the studio with a brush (or pencil or charcoal) in her hand, or outdoors, enjoying the natural world.

Karine shares, “Living in a rural desert environment gives us an opportunity to see wild animals in their native habitat. We are witness to the hard realities of life and death, as well as peaceful and playful moments.

As a painter, one must go past what one sees and find something more. Capitalizing on our ability to anthropomorphize animals, I hope to convey the sense of wonder felt each time I encounter a wild creature. When painting the desert animals, I find in them their tenacity to survive not just their harsh desert environment, but the destructive force of humanity. Maybe if I can help people see wildlife in a new way, others will feel a connection with the creatures we share this planet with.”
