👁️Messier 57 (M57), gökyüzündeki en ünlü gezegenimsi bulutsulardan biridir. Halka Bulutsusu (Ring Nebula) olarak da bilinir.
🌌 M57 temel bilgiler
Adı: Messier 57 / M57
Diğer adı: Halka Bulutsusu
NGC: NGC 6720
Türü: Gezegenimsi bulutsu
Takımyıldız: Lyra (Lir)
Uzaklığı: Yaklaşık 2.000–2.500 ışık yılı
Görünür parlaklığı: Yaklaşık 8,8 kadir

Stacking the Moon: A long process for a Mac user!

Seeing last night’s beautiful 80% moon reminded me that I’d left a batch of test frames sitting on my hard drive from last month. I’ve wanted to attempt a properly stacked lunar image for a long time, combining multiple frames to smash noise and pull out maximum sharpness.

Last month, I shot around 50 frames on a tripod at 600mm. Research pointed me to the classic lunar workflow: PIPP for alignment, AutoStakkert for stacking, and RegiStax for wavelets sharpening.

My biggest hurdle? All three are Windows-only, and I’m on an M4 Mac. After days of troubleshooting, Claude AI helped me configure Whisky/Wine to run the software smoothly.

The Workflow:
1️⃣ Prepped RAWs in Lightroom (basic exposure/contrast) and exported as TIFFs.
2️⃣ Aligned the frames in PIPP to compensate for the moon drifting across the sensor.
3️⃣ Stacked the best frames in AutoStakkert! into a single master TIFF.
4️⃣ Enhanced contrast and color saturation in Photoshop (plus added background stars for effect).
5️⃣ Final color balance and output polish in Lightroom.

Far from a perfect moon shot, but figuring out the software stack and post-processing pipeline was a massive learning win. Next clear night, I'm going for round two!

4 days of editing for a few seconds of video ☀️🌑

Stabilizing a 1,500-frame sequence of the +90% 2026 Solar Eclipse over Ireland was a massive test of my patience.

From batch processing in PIPP and hand-aligning frames in Photoshop, to compiling in DaVinci and writing a custom script with Claude to polish the final track.

Here is the final edit.

How many times have I told myself: Don’t rush to post, take a break, and look at the edit with fresh eyes?

A few hours after posting my first attempt at the Andromeda Galaxy, I looked at it again, realised the edit looked absolutely pants, and immediately threw it back into Lightroom/Sirl/Photoshop. Lesson firmly learned.

Same 10 raw frames, same dataset, just a completely different, much more refined result. It’s amazing what stepping away from the screen for a bit can do for you.

First attempt at Deep Space: Andromeda.

Just like with Milky Way photography, I’ve always seen these deep space objects posted online and wondered if it was something I could actually achieve myself.

I’d occasionally spot a tiny glimpse of Andromeda in my wide angle Milky Way shots and kept telling myself I’d attempt it properly with a longer lens one day. Well, last night was the night!

I originally headed out to practice Milky Way panoramas at longer focal lengths, but the clouds had other plans [shakes fist at sky]. Luckily, I had my trusty Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 in the bag, a lens that’s over 10 years old now and still going strong. Having seen great results from @pixpetephoto using the Move Shoot Move Nomad tracker at 200mm, I decided to give Andromeda a go.

The clouds eventually rolled in and ruined most of the run, leaving me with just 10 usable 60-second exposures out of 30.

This is by no means a perfect image, it’s missing detail and definitely needs more images to stack, and maybe even darks, flats, and bias frames to clean up the noise. But finding it in the night sky was a challenge in itself, and I learned a huge amount. I’ll definitely be back out with more time, more frames, and better technique next time!
