Sometimes, living with sickle cell can make the diagnosis feel like it takes up so much space in your life.

The appointments.
The medications.
The pain.
The fatigue.
The questions.
The days when your body doesn't cooperate with your plans.

But you are still you beyond all of that.

You are a friend.
A sibling.
A creator.
A professional.
A student.
A dreamer.
A person with gifts, hopes, talents and a future.

Sickle cell may be part of your story, but it is not the whole story.

What does better sickle cell care actually look like?

It goes beyond treating a pain crisis when it happens.

For many people living with sickle cell, quality care also means having access to healthcare, receiving accurate genotype testing, getting appropriate counselling and education, being listened to by healthcare professionals, and having support that extends beyond the hospital.

It also means recognizing that the experience of sickle cell is not the same for everyone.

Better care should be informed, respectful, accessible and patient-centred.

This conversation requires everyone at the table—people living with sickle cell, caregivers, healthcare professionals, researchers, policymakers and advocates.

5 THINGS I HAVE BEEN ABLE TO DO THROUGH THE HELP OF GOD

For over 10 years, God has given me the grace to turn my journey with sickle cell into a mission of service, advocacy and hope.

1. I have advocated for Sickle Cell for over 10 years.
I have used my voice to create awareness, educate communities and speak for warriors who sometimes feel unseen and unheard. What started as a voice became a mission.

2. I have taken Sickle Cell advocacy into communities.
Through the Obadof Foundation, I have reached communities, educated families and reminded warriors that they are not alone.

3. I created the Warriors Voice Sickle Cell Conference.
God gave me the vision for a platform that brings warriors, healthcare professionals, advocates, policymakers and allies together. More than a conference, it has become a voice and a movement.

4. I helped facilitate free health insurance for Sickle Cell Warriors in Kogi State.
By God's grace and through the Obadof Foundation, I have contributed to making healthcare more accessible because advocacy should go beyond words. It should also open doors.

5. I survived what should have broken me.
I have faced surgeries, months on oxygen, unconsciousness, hospital stays and moments when I did not know what the next day would bring. There were times I had no strength left to fight, but God kept me.

When I look back now, I don't just see the hospitals, pain or difficult seasons. I see grace. I see a God who kept making a way. I see Him continuing to write my story.

Everything I have accomplished reminds me that my life is not held together by my strength alone.

My life is God's assignment.
My story is God's testimony.
My survival is God's grace.

This September, as we mark Sickle Cell in Christ Awareness Month, WIC is choosing to tell stories like Kate's. Stories that acknowledge the reality of Sickle Cell, but don't end with the diagnosis.

Christ remains at the center.

His Strength, Our Identity. 🤍
