I learned a lot of unexpected (and kind of unrelated) things this week. One of those things is to always have at least two “waiting room” books downloaded to one’s Kindle. Always. Two books ready to go at all times. Because you never know when you’ll be sitting in the ER, desperate for distraction. You don’t want to finish the half a book you have downloaded and then have nothing to read.

What’s a waiting room book?

Good question. Very important question.

A waiting room book is a book you can count on to be a pleasant diversion while you are waiting in a medical situation. It’s a litmus test of sorts. The book has to be free of heavy triggers. It cannot be something you’d be embarrassed to read in public. It cannot be too difficult to read because you will be distracted. But it needs to have a decent plot to pull it forward because its job is to help you not think fretful thoughts. It needs to be light enough to lift you but not so light it floats away. It needs to have a guaranteed happy ending, but not be so predictable it makes you feel stupid for reading. Bonus points for a setting that captures you, well-constructed sentences, and characters you can love.

I nominate the entire Emma M. Lion series, by @bethbrower , as the absolutely most perfect waiting room books ever written. But I’ve read them all. And none of them were downloaded to my Kindle last weekend. If you have not yet met Emma, lucky you! She really is worth all the hype.

If you think you might be in for a lot of waiting rooms in your near future, firstly, know that I am praying for you. Secondly, download this one, and then the next one in the series, so that you have your mandatory two. Then know that there are more. Everyone comes away better for having spent some time in Mitford. These characters will become a part of your family. You will think about them with fondness for years to come. These books are so good on audio that only one of them is in my Kindle library. Either way, this is comfort food bound in a book.

Sunday, I had an ARC from @courtneywalsh downloaded, thank goodness. Courtney Walsh deliberately writes no-spice romance that is perfect for waiting rooms. She has a heart

The Mother-in-Law Book Club by @katehashwrites
Release Date: 10.13.26 - out now!

A huge thank you to @prhaudio for blessing my ears with this INCREDIBLE #gifted alc. I absolutely devoured this story. #prhaudiopartner

I was HOOKED from chapter 1. Andi , our FMC overhears a group of older women complaining about their daughters-in-law on a plane. Recently divorced and heading to a new job, she’s had enough ! She stands up and speaks her mind.

What she doesn’t expect ? This interaction leading to an invitation to their book club - or to friendships she desperately needs.

This book made me SO emotional in the BEST way. Finding love and friendships in the most unique way but Andi is so deserving after all she’s been through. She was divorcing her horrible ex (who was also a terrible MIL) 😂

Do yourself a favor and get this audio in your ears asap!

🎙️ Narrated by: the queen @britpressley . She can do no wrong. Thank you for making this audio come to life in the BEST way!

💭 do you have a good relationship with your in-laws? Or are you in a book club? If so, what’s the best part?
