Caught in the sun's blinding light, a Brandt's cormorant dives through the kelp forest in search of a fishy lunch in Monterey Bay, California, US. The rich biodiversity of the kelp forest supports life both below and above the surface.

Meet Taz, the 12-year-old pittie mix. Taz is a goofball who does not act her age. She still loves her walks paired with a sunbathing session afterwards. She lived with another dog previously. In the Shelter, Taz has demonstrated that she may prefer to be the only dog in her next home. Taz has a history living with being house trained and being someone’s indoor companion.

Thanks to @katevylet for the lovely photo of Taz🩷

Taz’s adoption fee is reduced to $75 since she is considered a senior dog (6 years or older) - so more money for toys and treats in her new home!

Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.

Meet Curie – the adolescent white “Shep-sky” (Shepherd mixed with a Husky) looking to be someone’s adventure buddy! Curie is a spirited, energetic gal who has been quite a goofball since her arrival at the Shelter – eager and excited to come out of her kennel, leaning in for TLC and enjoying romping around with similarly aged and sized dogs. Curie would thrive as someone’s adventure buddy to explore trails, beaches and all that the area has to offer. With daily mental and physical stimulation (and provided a canine companion to play with in her next home), we anticipate Curie will be a great sidekick. Curie has a history of being crate trained and house trained in her previous home.

Thanks to @katevylet for the photos of Curie - they are fabulous in showing off her personality. Come meet Curie today!

Curie’s adoption fee is sponsored by the Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation thanks to “Leave No One Behind fund” – a fund that draws adopter’s eyes towards animals who have been in the Shelter’s care a little longer than average waiting for the right adopter to call their best friend.

The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter is open from 11am to 6pm every day and located at 1001 Rodriguez Street at the corner of 7th Avenue in Santa Cruz. Our telephone number is 831-454-7200. Last meet and greet ends at 4:30 pm. Visit our website at scanimalshelter.org or click on link in Bio.

Mr. Potato Head joins us as a stray, so unfortunately we don’t know much about his life before the shelter. Mr. Potato Head is looking for a home where he can showcase all his hats, and noses, ears, mouths, and eyes. We suspect Mr. Potato Head is a mixture of Chihuahua and French Bulldog, or something of the sorts, and is about 2 years old. He is a bit nervous in the shelter setting but warms up quickly to strangers with sweet talking, treats, and respectful handling. He loves to be petted and snuggle in a lap once he has a little time getting to know you. With all of his moving parts, Mr. Potato Head would do well in a home that will provide him time to decompress and a sweet, steady routine.

This dog’s adoption fee is reduced to $70 from May 1st to May 15th as part of “Empty the Shelters”, an adoption event hosted by BISSELL Pet Foundation and Cathy Bissell to help pets across the nation find the loving adoptive homes they deserve.

Thanks to volunteer photographer Kate @katevylet for the photos that captured MPH’s cuteness🥰

Adoption fee includes vaccinations, deworming, flea preventative, microchipping, licensing (dogs), and spay/neuter surgeries.
