“It is a meditation on wildfire.”

NOW ON VIEW:

“Harbingers” by Katherine Rosing is an immersive installation of tattered fiber columns pierced by flame, evoking a “ghost forest” in the aftermath of wildfire.

The tree-like cylinders are made from stark white linen gauze, painted with India ink, then burned and charred with a candle. Working with flame was an intense study of oxygen, fuel, and wind gusts, and at the same time a meditation on wildfire and the carbon these fires release.

“These forests are threatened. They experience drought, which amplifies wildfire. We’ve been taught, in a way, to trust that the trees and the forest are going to save us. And they are doing a lot to save us, but we also have to make our own contributions and find ways to make small changes in our lives to use less and waste less.” – Katherine Rosing

“Harbingers” is on view now through November 29th.

Artist Katherine Steichen Rosing (@katherinerosing) envisions the invisible forces connecting forests and watersheds to atmosphere and climate processes through abstract-symbolic paintings and immersive installations. As one of the three elements to her show, Harbingers, her small paintings allude to the aftermath of wildfire and to the spirits of trees lost. Through these pieces, Rosing asks audiences to consider the following, “We have looked for forests to save us from the climate crisis. Will they survive — and how much is their distress adding to atmospheric carbon?”

Listen to Rosing describe the background behind her paintings and check out the rest of the video interview on our YouTube channel, where Rosing gives a more in-depth discussion on her process and overall exhibition:

Two weeks ago I was able to share my newest re-worked / re-imagined / re-invented piece with everyone at @artlitlab. Part of their 10 year anniversary show and retrospective, it’s a true honor to show with ALL, especially with my more personal work!

In addition to ‘Kye [2022, 2026]’, I contributed a portrait of Emily from @AtwoodAtelier to their 10x10 exhibit on the 3rd floor.

‘Kye [2022, 2026]’ is my latest ‘re-imagined’ piece, incorporating a portrait from Atwood Atelier completed in one 3.5 hour session from a live model. Part of my effort to repurpose the dozens of paintings I’ve created over the years and to honor the artist I was at the time, the works themselves, and to integrate my passion for found, accumulated and inhereted materials.

Though this is now a finished piece, it incorporates a number of other paintings, ‘canibalized’ for certain colors or aspects. If I had to really guess, it has pieces of at least 5 other works in it! It does feel a little taboo to cut into paintings, but they weren’t being used anyways and many of them were unfinished or demo pieces.

On top of that, 99% of the piece is secured only through sewing and stitching with embroidery floss, most of which I inhereted from my Grama Anne. She had a fondness for the sparkly, shiny, and metallic flosses that she’d use in all sorts of projects. I also incorporated a couple of strands of her silk ribbon, initially intended for embroidering flowers. My other grandma, my Grandma Judy, was also quite creative. Though I haven’t incorporated any of her materials (yet!) I wore an inhereted silk blouse of hers, and am looking forward to experimenting with her artistic materials as well. She actually wrote a book on how to make flowers out of fabric, and I’m looking forward to learning from that as well and exploring how to integrate both our practices!

Be sure to check out the show before it closes on November 7th, there’s so much incredible work, it feels crazy to be exhibiting here!
