What if the most important thing for your aviation career isn’t your resume but your tribe?

In this episode of She Flies, I sat down with aviation journalist, author, and workforce advocate Kathryn Creedy to talk about the side of aviation that doesn’t get discussed nearly enough.
From mentorship and networking to workforce development and hidden career paths, Kathryn shares insights she’s gained from decades of covering the aviation industry and working to create opportunities for the next generation.

Some of my favorite takeaways:
✨ Why networking starts long before your first job
🤝 How finding your “tribe” can open doors throughout your career
🛠️ The incredible opportunities in aviation maintenance, dispatch, airport operations, and other careers beyond the cockpit
📈 How aviation can change the trajectory of entire families and communities
🌎 Why states across the country are investing heavily in aviation and aerospace workforce development
💡 Why every future aviator should have mentors, connections, and a Plan B

One thing Kathryn said that really stuck with me:
“If you have a passion, there is a place for you in aviation.”

Whether you’re interested in flying, engineering, journalism, maintenance, or something else entirely, this episode is a reminder that aviation is bigger than most people realize and that there are more pathways into the industry than ever before.

Happy International Civil Aviation Day 2025.

#CivilAviation as one of the best things happened to humankind in the spectrum of aviation history.

One of Leonardo's most iconic images, the Aerial Screw (also known as the Helicopter) illustrates the #Ingenuity of da Vinci.

Soviet satellite #Sputnik — the first man-made object to orbit the Earth on 4 October 1957. #NASA astronauts, engineers, and American industries spent the decade working round the clock. And by 1967, it was time for Apollo's first manned flight.

In the Renaissance, people built cathedrals that were multi-generational. They were great architectural renderings that reached to the heavens. If Cosimo de' Medici could have looked into the future, he would have seen the story of the #Renaissance unfold on the ceiling of the dome itself, #weighing 37,000 tons and using more than four million bricks. #Brunelleschi's dome was proof that man could conquer the seemingly impossible. A friend of Cosimo's wrote of its impact, it touches the skies and casts its #shadow of the whole of Tuscany.

When we saw the first image from #Ingenuity helicopter which showed it's shadow on the surface of Mars during it's flight, that moment was so profound for all of us. And Ingenuity #weighing just four pounds not just touched the skies, in fact it went #beyond limits of sky and now casts it's #shadow on entire planet Earth from planet Mars.

We are in the second renaissance phase as in less than a single lifespan, we went from first manned flight to first man on the moon and now first flight on Mars. Wright Brothers #defied all doubt and danger with their successful first flight in 1903. And in April 2021 NASA #MarsHelicopter Ingenuity hovered majestically over the Martian surface successfully. With NASA’s Ingenuity, Wright Brothers dreams of flying got accomplished again but this time on #Mars...👏🙂 As Ingenuity carried a small swatch of muslin from lower-left wing of Wright Brothers Flyer-1. It was located underside of Ingenuity helicopter's solar panel.

#Renaissance 2.0

Today is the day that Women in Aviation International Chapters around the world celebrate Girls in Aviation Day. The Carib Skies Chapter celebrated its 2025 edition in June in Saint Barthélemy.

To commemorate GIAD today, the Carib Skies Chapter would like to recognize the efforts of 3 wonderful women who are pushing aviation forward by making internships available, engaging with education institutions to offer aviation education to Sint Maarten students, and by engaging with stakeholders to support students.

Minister Plenipotentiary representing Sint Maarten in the Netherlands Gracita R. Arrindell is pariticpating in the initiative of the Netherlands Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management in the Cari-Aire internship program along with Aruba, Curacao, Bonaire, Saba and Statia where aviation internships become available for students .

Minister of Education, Culture, Youth, and Sports Melissa Gumbs is currently in talks with the University of the West Indies to offer aviation courses to Sint Maarten students.

Melissa Lake, Conseillère Territoriale Saint Barthélemy, is a founding member of the Carib Skies Chapter of Women in Aviation International and coordinated the first Girls In Aviation Day in Saint Barthélemy along with all the stakeholders and volunteers in and around the airport.

Feeling Sky-High With Gratitude

A big thank you to BlueSky Magazine for featuring my CARIBAVIA presentation, “Sky High: Unlocking Economic Growth through Aviation Investment in the Caribbean” 🚁🌊.

From St. Barth’s stunning views to the pages of one of aviation’s most respected publications—it’s an honor to share how the Caribbean can go from “pretty vacation spot” to global aviation powerhouse. 💪✈️

We’ve got the location, the talent, and the drive. Now it’s time to invest, take off, and keep our economies flying higher than my coffee intake at the conference. ☕️🚀

It all started with a spark at the 2021 Caribavia Conference; an idea to bring Girls in Aviation Day to the Caribbean.

By 2022, that dream became a reality with the very first GIAD at Grand Case Airport, where girls from both sides of the island got to explore, engage, and envision their future in aviation. 🌍🛩

These incredible women were the ones who planted the seed.

@emeraldmediauk

visionaries and mentors who, after attending the 2021 Caribavia Conference, set in motion the movement for the creation of the Carib Skies Chapter of Women in Aviation International.

From that first spark, we’ve committed to Connect. Engage. Inspire. young minds across Sint Maarten, Saint Martin, Saint Barths and beyond.

Through hands-on experiences and aviation exploration, our goal is to show girls they belong in every corner of the skies.

With gratitude to those who lit the way — the journey continues. 🚀

Thank you to these dynamic women for connecting, engaging and inspiring since that very first Caribavia conference I attended back in 2021.

The pressure is on to continue nourishing and growing that seed you planted.

Caribbean skies met BIG dreams at the first-ever Girls in Aviation Day in St. Maarten/St. Martin in June 2022. 🇸🇽🇫🇷
From the jaw-dropping arrival of two U.S. Marine Corps Ospreys to hands-on activities like “Race Your Glider,” “Fun with Drones,” and “Dress Like a Pilot” these girls got a full-throttle intro into the world of aviation! 👩🏽‍✈️🚁📡

30 future aviators from both sides of the island explored aircraft up close (hello, Robinson R22, Cessna 152, and Pilatus PC-12 ✈️), met inspiring female role models, and earned stamps in their GIAD passports at each fun station.

With support from local businesses (thank you Dutch Tours and Edeis) schools, and HeliRiviera at Grand Case Airport, this day was one for the books.
50 aviation books were gifted to keep the inspiration flying high.

Next stop: inviting girls from even more Caribbean islands!
