We got the chance to return to USM Haller’s London showroom, this time to see ‘Nomads’, a new installation with German-based illustrator, artist, designer and author Olaf Hajek.

Transforming the showroom and its windows into a series of domestic spaces, Hajek explores how USM’s modular furniture can be used within the home, moving beyond its familiar architectural aesthetic and into a more decorative setting.

The installation is organised around four distinct environments: work, relax, sleep and lounge. Each demonstrates a different way of using the USM system, both as functional storage and as a central feature within an interior.

What makes the installation particularly interesting is the contrast between USM’s clean, geometric forms and Hajek’s distinctive visual style. His hand-painted artwork draws on nature, folklore and historical storytelling, bringing colour, pattern and an almost surreal quality to the space.

This is further developed through a selection of wallcoverings and fabrics created by Hajek for Christopher Farr Cloth, including Trees of Wonder, Dancing Vines and Dancing Parade. These patterns, alongside hand-painted lamps, furniture and complementary art pieces, bring together different materials and visual references without losing sight of the furniture itself.

The installation brings together furniture, textiles, artwork and lighting to create four distinct living environments. By placing USM’s modular system alongside Hajek’s hand-painted patterns and carefully selected objects, the project shows how the furniture can adapt to different interiors, working as both practical storage and part of a wider design scheme.

Nomads launched on 14 October and will remain on display until December at USM’s showroom, 12 Cramer Street, Marleybone Square.
