It’s peony season in the Southern Hemisphere - sorry to my dear artist friends in the North, but we had to take it when you had it and we didn’t ;) If you’ve painted peonies before, you’ll know that, like tulips they have zero consideration for your artistic pursuits. Once those tight little balls open, there’s just no stopping them. Drastic measures must be taken to tame their wild ways. Industry secret - floristry wire, museum wax, entomology pins (and lots of apologizing to the flowers), floristry tape, dental floss, flower frogs, blobs of oil-free clay, sticky tape, masking tape, you name it, it’s all in our flower taming kits (🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻Katie, Kathleen and Kamille) Then there’s the constructed ‘light box’ if you don’t have a fancy schmancy one, together with the controlled directional lighting. And you haven’t even started painting yet but a great set-up is key to a great painting. Let’s go! #fineart #oilpainting #peony #studiosetup #artiststudio

🌻 The Flower Queen is BACK! LET’S GO!👸

🚨 &… we are over HALF FULL! 🚨

We are so excited to welcome the fantastic @katiegwhipple back to Yorkshire next Summer. 💕

A classically trained painter, Katie has become internationally recognised for her luminous floral paintings that celebrate the beauty, vitality, and fleeting nature of the natural world. After studying at the Grand Central Atelier in New York and furthering her artistic education in Italy, she developed a distinctive style rooted in the traditions of the Old Masters while expressing a deeply personal vision. Katie’s thoughtful and encouraging approach to teaching inspires artists to slow down, observe more closely, and create paintings filled with sensitivity, confidence, and life. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn from one of today’s most accomplished contemporary floral painters.

For this workshop, we will be painting flowers from Joe & Symi’s garden! Though we would love to say which flowers, this will really depend on what is in bloom at that time! We are sure there will be an abundance of beauty to choose from!

We will paint all 5 days with Katie demonstrating throughout the workshop. Katie is happy to demonstrate each morning or demonstrate a few mornings and let the students work the rest of the time. Katie will often let the class vote on whether or not they want more demo time or less.

After last year’s workshops with @katiegwhipple and @nancyguzik we have a garden full of flowers so I’m hoping we can use flowers from our garden for this workshop! If not, I know Katie will want to go to every garden center within a 100 mile radius and wipe them out anyways 😅

American artist Katie G. Whipple.
Born in 1991 in Southfield, Michigan; grew up in Avon, Indiana.
After high school, she moved to New York to study academic painting at the Grand Central Atelier under Jacob Collins, Travis Schlaht, and Edward Minoff.
She lives in Southampton, New York, with her family.

Awards:

Alma Schapiro Prize (2013–2014): Allowed her to go to the American Academy in Rome for three months to study old master works. She extended the trip to eight months, travelling through Rome, Florence, and Naples.
Scholarships from the Grand Central Atelier and the Art Renewal Center, as well as an award from the Indiana State Museum for collection acquisition.

· Shift to flowers:
She originally trained to become a portrait painter. Inspired by the ancient Roman fresco “Garden Landscape” from the Villa of Livia, she switched entirely to floral still lifes.
· Style:
Her hyperrealistic flowers are often painted in oil on wooden panels. The artist herself considers her flowers “alive” and strives to convey the “living spirit of nature.”

Saturday’s Kids Drawing Workshop with Katie Whipple was a wonderful afternoon of creativity and exploration. The kids had a blast learning from the best, discovering new drawing techniques, and bringing their ideas to life through observation and imagination. ✨

WOW! I got to see this stunning painting by @katiegwhipple today at the Indiana State Museum. I was a little disappointed that they didn’t have more art on display, but I was happy to have discovered this one!
