I’m so excited for the opening of East End Collective 9 at @southamptonartscenter tonight! Join us from 5-7pm for a wonderful evening of celebrating local artists!

This painting is a study of magnolias from spring of 2020, deep in the early Covid times. It was painted right around the time I found out I was pregnant with my son Hewitt, who just started kindergarten. Time makes no sense! Magnolias are one of my very favorite flowers, I’m excited to share this piece with you. (It is a study for a larger painting that was started way back then as well, and is still lingering in my studio waiting to be finished. Sometimes paintings take longer to be born that humans) by @katiegwhipple

Please join me on Saturday, October 3rd for the opening of East End Collective 9 at the @southamptonartscenter from 5-7pm. It will be a fabulous show of local artists from the East End! I’m so excited to finally be showing in the town I’ve called home for the last 6 years.

I will be showing a collection of flower paintings, all of which were painted here in Southampton from flowers grown in my own garden! Pictured here is “Zinnia Study”, the painting I made in preparation for the large work I am painting now. It isn’t typical for me to show something in this state of ‘work in progress’, but my husband tells me it is interesting and worthwhile to show my whole process!

I hope to see you at the opening on Saturday, local friends! by @katiegwhipple

This big ol’ zinnia took 2 weeks and two flowers to complete! But she was fun! I liked the random curly petals from this variety… but I’m not 100% sure what kind she is. Either from Dawn Creek or Johnny’s Seeds! (I don’t label my plantings because I am lazy 😆) by @katiegwhipple

A small piece of a large zinnia commission I have been working on for quite some time. This is the third summer of growing zinnias for this painting. (I did have an interruption in the form of my daughter June being born.) The grouping of four flowers towards the bottom were from last years flowers, the three pink ones at the top were my first from this year’s crop!

Long projects like this are so fun for me. I was always envious of writers that got years to write and research their books…. Well I have kind of found my answer to that in growing the flowers I paint. It is so rewarding, but does require a lot of patience from my clients! So happy the zinnias are now blooming in earnest, but also so busy trying to keep up!

To quote my son yesterday as I was puttering around the garden, “Ooh, I’m mama, I’m so busy with my flowers because I love them so much!” 🤣🌼 by @katiegwhipple

🌻 The Flower Queen is BACK! 👸

We are so excited to welcome the fantastic @katiegwhipple back to Yorkshire next Summer. 💕

A classically trained painter, Katie has become internationally recognised for her luminous floral paintings that celebrate the beauty, vitality, and fleeting nature of the natural world. After studying at the Grand Central Atelier in New York and furthering her artistic education in Italy, she developed a distinctive style rooted in the traditions of the Old Masters while expressing a deeply personal vision. Katie’s thoughtful and encouraging approach to teaching inspires artists to slow down, observe more closely, and create paintings filled with sensitivity, confidence, and life. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn from one of today’s most accomplished contemporary floral painters.

🌺🌸🌷🌻💐🌸🌹

For this workshop, we will be painting flowers from Joe & Symi’s garden! Though we would love to say which flowers, this will really depend on what is in bloom at that time! We are sure there will be an abundance of beauty to choose from!

We will paint all 5 days with Katie demonstrating throughout the workshop. Katie is happy to demonstrate each morning or demonstrate a few mornings and let the students work the rest of the time. Katie will often let the class vote on whether or not they want more demo time or less.

After last year’s workshops with @katiegwhipple and @nancyguzik we have a garden full of flowers so I’m hoping we can use flowers from our garden for this workshop! If not, I know Katie will want to go to every garden center within a 100 mile radius and wipe them out anyways 😅

Last poppies of the season! They are my absolute favorite flowers to paint and grow. So much personality and so many possibilities with their whimsical natures. The two big peachy pink poppies are Papaver orientale, Princess Victoria Louise and the red poppies are Shirley poppies (not sure what kind). The two Victoria Louise poppies were the last in my garden to bloom, so when I wanted to add another peachy petal to the composition, I had to make it up. It’s kind of surprising how often I have to add made up petals or flowers to my paintings to finish off compositions! I prefer to work from life whenever possible, but it is a different and fun challenge to try to make something look convincing from imagination.

Now I am collecting the dried poppy seed pods from the garden to sow them for next year’s blooms. And the zinnias have started in full force! Flowers are the best because there is always something to look forward to, and always a garden chore I’m behind on. Back to the easel to paint zinnias now! by @katiegwhipple

Another tiny (6”x8”) commission from my first flush of garden roses this summer. I couldn’t resist adding the bud to make my version of a “Madonna and child.” This was painted for very special mother and son, representing his birth flower.

The rose painted here is Claire Austin. I just read the news of David J. C. Austin’s passing. I am grateful for his family and the legacy of beauty they continue to share with the world. I am grateful their roses have found their way into my garden and into my paintings. 🌹 by @katiegwhipple

I had the pleasure of painting this little 8”x10” poppy painting as a birthday present for a neighbor I grew up with. It is so special to be asked to make a painting by someone that has known me most of my life!

My poppies had a spectacular year. They are my favorite flowers to grow and to paint and bring me immeasurable joy. I’m currently working on another little poppy commission with the very last of my blooms while I patiently wait for my zinnias to be ready for harvest!
