FM PROJECT // Private Residence / London

Discovery often begins with the smallest detail. A simple cabinet becomes a canvas for the memory of objects—the profound belief that materials absorb the stories and moments we hold dear.

Through careful exploration of surface and tone, its finish shifts with the light, revealing new nuances as time passes. The result is not just decoration, but a living atmosphere, quietly waiting to gather and preserve your own memories.

We continue our series ‘Conversations with Artists’ — a chance to get to know the artists whose work inspires us, hear their stories and discover the ideas behind their practice.

Today, we’re talking to Katya Shkolnik @katya.shkolnik, a multidisciplinary artist whose practice explores the intersections of time, memory, and human experience.

In the carousel, you'll see the photographic series Chiwong Monastery, which tells the story of a place where past and future seem to stand still in the present. Preserving centuries of wisdom while quietly absorbing the new, the monastery feels timeless — these photographs could have been taken a hundred years ago or a hundred years from now.

At the heart of the series are the young monks: lively and playful like any other children, yet sometimes their gaze suddenly reveals an unexpected stillness and depth. Through these moments, the series reflects on time, inner peace, and the feeling of encountering something much larger than ourselves.

NOVE: 05 / KATYA SHKOLNIK

Katya Shkolnik @katya.shkolnik
is a Milan-based multidisciplinary artist working across photography, sound, painting and installation. With a background in nuclear engineering, her practice explores time, perception, observation and the unseen structures that shape our experience of reality.

Her work often brings scientific thinking into dialogue with questions of consciousness and perception. Moving between physical and digital forms, Shkolnik considers how observation affects what is observed, and how information, memory and meaning shift through the act of being perceived.

For NOVE 2026, Shkolnik presents Believe Me, It Is Beautiful, a conceptual sculpture that investigates the threshold between material presence and digital potential. A transparent plexiglass cube contains a flash drive holding an unpublished photographic composition, described as beautiful but deliberately kept inaccessible. The image can only be accessed by physically destroying the sculpture, creating a condition in which the object and its hidden content cannot exist simultaneously.

Positioned between sculpture, archive and digital media, the work stages a conflict between preservation and revelation. Access becomes an irreversible transformation, turning curiosity into loss and knowledge into entropy. Drawing on ideas of quantum observation and measurement back-action, the work considers perception as an active process in which revealing something also changes its existing state.

The sculpture remains suspended between visibility and invisibility, certainty and speculation, object and information. Beauty exists here as a possibility that cannot be verified without destroying the structure that protects it. Believe Me, It Is Beautiful asks whether the inaccessible can hold value precisely because it remains unseen, and whether potential itself can carry greater significance than disclosure.

FM PROJECT // Villa Palma / Palma De Mallorca

Walking through the local stone archway, you're immediately greeted by a bright, airy lobby bathed in natural light from a magnificent skylight.

What makes this space truly special are the personal details: a custom-designed console and stunning, original artwork.

Katya Shkolnik @katya.shkolnik is a Soviet-born, Milan-based multidisciplinary artist working across photography, video, sound, and large-scale installation. Trained as a nuclear engineer before committing to artistic practice, her biography reads as a series of sovereign redirections, each a small act of will against the grain of a life that, by her own account, was effectively pre-assigned. The work that emerged from this improbable itinerary is organized around a single, persistent obsession: time—not as a metaphor, but as a physical and perceptual phenomenon whose structure she believes art is uniquely equipped to expose.

@katya.shkolnik I thought your name was interesting so I made a monogram seal for you using Baybayin, an ancient writing system in the Philippines. And, thank you for following me. #pigment0art

New Interview Live on The FLUX Review

Katya Shkolnik is a Milan-based multidisciplinary artist and photographer whose work explores the unseen structures of time, consciousness and reality through immersive perceptual experiences.

With a background in nuclear engineering, her practice moves across photography, video, sound and large-scale installation. Using the camera as a research tool, she examines ideas of quantum physics, duality and the shifting boundary between reality and illusion.

Scale is central to her work. Her compositions evoke the vastness of the night sky, drawing the viewer beyond the limits of everyday perception and towards a deeper awareness of our place within time itself.

Her work has appeared in international auctions, including Christie’s London and BFAMI, and is held in private collections across Canada, the United States, Kazakhstan, Brunei, Russia, Spain and the United Kingdom. In 2025, she presented her solo exhibition Manifesto on Time at the Abilkhan Kasteev National Art Museum in Almaty.
