As part of Sustainable Fashion Week UK @sustainablefashionweek_uk 2026, the José Hendo R³ Campaign @r3_campaign brought its message to the streets of London for the very first time.

The R³ Campaign was founded in 2014 following the Rana Plaza factory collapse in Bangladesh.
For more than a decade, it has championed a simple but important message:
Responsibility lies with both the maker and the wearer.

For the first time, we took the R³ message onto the streets.
Why?
Because sometimes traditional fashion presentations can leave the conversation behind. People see the clothes, but not always the story, the choices, or the values behind them.

The R³ Street Walk was created to bring people into the conversation.
It wasn’t about creating a perfect fashion moment.
It was about living the values we talk about.
We did our own hair and make-up.
We wore our own shoes.
We proudly carried the R³ branding.

Many of us wore garments from previous José Hendo collections, some restyled and some worn exactly as they were.
We travelled by bus and train, despite transport disruptions across London.
Because R³ is about:
• Using what we already have.
• Valuing what already exists.
• Extending the life of our garments.
• Making conscious choices.
• Sharing stories and inspiring reflection.
Most importantly, we started conversations.
A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us as part of Sustainable Fashion Week UK, supported us, and helped make the first R³ Street Walk such a meaningful experience.
And now the conversation continues.
Our R³ Ambassadors are carrying the message into their families, schools, workplaces, neighbourhoods, creative spaces and communities. @kaumaarts @gsnk10 @teriimelda @isaiahwamala4 @bella._.burrowss @epxcs
The Street Walk may be over, but the conversations are only just beginning.

Because every outfit has a story.
Every garment has a journey.
Every choice has an impact.

MAKE YOUR STORY COUNT FOR PEOPLE & PLANET.

August 2021 was brutal and beautiful — for all the right reasons.

It began with me delivering a Mindful African Art workshop for my friend’s hen party. A week later, I was fired for “inconsistent performance” — which really meant: we don’t like the mistakes you make while we overwork you 12 hours a day until you burn out.

The next day, I went to my friends wedding. I was numb, but grateful to be with people. And then, almost as if the universe intervened, Mercy Nabirye of @kaumaarts invited me to support her vision for the Connecting Communties, a Black dance diaspora festival in my home town, Greenwich. I wasn’t sure I had the capacity — but my heart said yes. And that yes pulled me out of bed, supported me through my latest depression burnout, and back into real life.

That August, I began scouting venues for the festival, and saw the seeds of my practice begin to sprout:

✨ Photos from my first major in person art workshop with @peckhamplatform — their first in-person event that year at @peckhampalms, a Black woman-led social enterprise.

✨ Airbrushed images from a photoshoot in my flat, from a generous friend

✨ A new print sale of Floral Crown

✨ And most importantly, I completed Slow Down Birungi — one of my most meaningful artworks that guides me to safety and honours my very being

Looking back, August 2021 was the month I become a full-time Birungi and my full time job is to learn to be well in community.

This post is part of my series reflecting on six transformative Augusts that shaped my practice and my work with participants.
