The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah This was highly recommended to me by @kayfullybooked and when I received a copy through the @chapter25bookclub book swap it felt like the perfect time to read it! Firstly, I will say I devoured this book. I sat down to start it and before I knew it I was 250 pages in and it was way past my bedtime! The atmosphere in this book is incredible. You really feel that you are hiding away in the Alaskan wilderness with Leni. The characters in this book are complicated to say the least. Hannah does a brilliant job of making you both sympathise and hate them. Both of Leni’s parents made incredibly poor choices that directly impacted their daughter and their community, but ultimately they were both victims of their environments who can be understood to a point. I loved this book for the build up of tension that hooked me instantly, the simultaneously hopeful and hopeless atmosphere, and an ending that tied it all up together well. The only reason this is four stars for me instead of five is that I didn’t quite feel the emotional depth I was expecting. It is without a doubt an emotive book, but I didn’t connect with the characters well enough to be truly devastated where I felt I was supposed to be That said, a brilliant book that I really enjoyed. I’ll definitely be working my way through the rest of her catalogue!
