I often see so much discourse online over 4c (etc) natural hair. And I can gratefully say that I don’t relate to most of it.

I grew up surrounded by women in all professional, political and economic spheres with a range of natural hair styles. When I got older, I started to do my own hair and realized that your hair is speaking to you if you choose to listen. My hair care is tied to my diet, my hydration, my stress levels and so much more. I spend countless hours a year doing my own hair because I love learning more about myself through it.

So my 4c hair care advice to other women trying to figure out their (or their children’s) hair care is to listen to your hair and not influencers. Your hair will tell you everything it needs to grow to its best extent. Stop trying to mimic someone else’s hair and embrace the uniquely beautiful hair that grows from your own head.

Everyone keeps talking about being “investor-ready.”

But what happens when the advice wasn’t designed for you?

For rural African entrepreneurs, fundraising can require much more than a perfect pitch deck. It can mean building relationships, learning how to advocate for your business, expanding your network and understanding how to turn opportunities into actual capital.

In this episode of Footnotes, we sit down with Alexander Tillman to talk about fundraising, networking and what rural entrepreneurs can do differently to become genuinely investment-ready.

Over the past 2 years, I've been working alongside my family elders as our bloodline confronts decades of disputes around succession, governance, and our shared history. I honestly thought I was just there to help with research. I didn't realise it would forever change the way I see people, leadership, and wealth.

Watching what greed can do over generations is sobering. Out of more than 6,000 descendants, the actions of 7 people deprived entire generations of opportunity. It made me realise how much damage secrecy can do when no one is willing to ask difficult questions.

Then something extraordinary happened.

With the support of the North West Premier's Office, the Department of Traditional Affairs 🇿🇦, their team of investigators and anthropologists, our family was able to verify land that had effectively been hidden from us for generations… just under 100 hectares. That’s 100 soccer fields

We went to go see it this week and standing there, I wasn't thinking about ownership. I was thinking about possibility.

How many businesses could grow here?
How many families could earn a living?
How much food could be produced?
What could be built if stewardship replaced greed?

My younger cousins and I stood there crying tears of excitement and relief. While many of our elders understandably saw regret and loss, we saw a blank canvas.

Sometimes the greatest inheritance isn't money. It's being given the chance to build something your grandchildren will one day thank you for.

Our family group chats have changed. They're no longer about where we're going this weekend. They're about what we want this place to become over the next 10, 20, even 50 years. How we govern it. How we protect it. How we make sure the mistakes of previous generations are never repeated.

I don't know what we'll build yet. But now I do know that real legacy isn't what you inherit. It’s what you leave behind.

👑 Very unrelatable African village princess things.

One thing that surprised me recently was learning that the average attendee at most (🇿🇦) tribal council, royal house, or community property association meetings is usually in their 50s and older, with majority attendees being already way in to retirement years.

Over the past 2 years, I’ve been using my research skills to support the elders in my family as they’ve worked through issues of family lineage, governance, succession, and historical records. Somewhere along the way, I realised that one day they will all be past this life and it’s the next generation that will have to know this history to continue their work.

So I made a promise that this year, I’d attend as many family and community meetings as possible.

The truth is, they’re not always easy. They’re often emotional, inconvenient, far away and confrontational. Whenever I ask people my age why they don’t attend, the answers are usually the same: it’s too far, it’s too heavy or the elders will handle it.

My worry isn’t that our generation lacks the ability to protect our history, our land, or our institutions. It’s that we’ll lose them because we underestimated the value of simply showing up.

Today my dad and I travelled to a day of this month-long investigation committee currently being conducted by the 🇿🇦 Department of Traditional Affairs and the North West provincial Premier’s Office, following a request from our family to help resolve longstanding governance matters.

It’s a very deeply triggering experience. And unrelatable too. To have your family secrets stripped bare for the national archives. But I’m grateful because it’s given me a deeper understanding of my life thus far. Deeper in my understanding of my family lineage. Deeper in my appreciation of our customs and traditions. Deeper in the responsibility that comes with being a custodian of your people’s story.

History doesn’t only belong in books or content. The stories we are desperately in need of aren’t going viral yet. They’re still being lived out in real lives in community halls, and the only way to find them is to simply decide to take a seat and listen.

I know this video doesn’t look like it but I’ve actually been golfing for my whole life 😭😂🥹

For 2 reasons:

Where the Leopard Park Golf Course is today actually used to be a graveyard until the 1930s. Then Kgosi Lucas Mangope II repurposed the land during his reign in Bophutatswana to become a community asset - a gold course. My great-great grandmother is buried close to the 18th hole ⛳️ So we’ve always liked to visit often. The original Mahikeng Golf Club started in 1959, and it has recently been rescued and reopened in June 2026. My dad would tell us tales of Banogeng 🐍 🧬 and the Mosiane family over lunch at the country club when we came back to visit family.

The 2nd reason is just being from the north west province of South Africa 🇿🇦 The province of historically Tswana people used to be a hub for golf and horse riding. [insert joke about a stereotypical short tribe playing short people sports]. 🇧🇼

As a result, I’ve never said no to a day at the course and I don’t think I am genetically able to even if I tried. I even have a list of top 5 courses in South Africa, rated by burgers 🍔

Anyway I haven’t been to this course since it reopened. I went to host a social club thing but today was actually a refreshing reminder of how many lives our lands have lived and therefore how many versions of ourselves still exist to see 🏌🏾

There’s something deeply humbling about coming from a royal family in a modern world. 👑🧬

Growing up, I just avoided talking about it. It’s difficult to explain to people that your family has spent generations at war over succession, and history. For a long time, it felt easier to distance myself from it all. But I’ve learned that you gain nothing by pretending you’re not part of your own story.

Since early 2024, I’ve found myself using my research and intelligence skills closer to home than I ever imagined… as in quite literally for my own bloodline. Helping elders like my dad and his cousins uncover generations of fraud, tracing stolen assets, identifying where lies were used to break trust, and piecing together forgotten history has been one of the most sobering experiences of my life.

Today, I’m incredibly proud to be Banogeng 🐍. We are a small Tswana tribe that has been in Botswana 🇧🇼 and South Africa 🇿🇦 since pre-colonial history but a resilient one. Throughout our history, people have tried to erase us, divide us, or take what belongs to us. Yet we continue to fight for our history, our dignity, and our future.

A sincere thank you to the North West Premier’s Office and the Department of Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs 🇿🇦 for sending representatives and establishing an investigative committee to Matile, Mahikeng. This represents the evolution of nearly 2 years of our family’s work, documentation, and persistence. We look forward to supporting the next phase of the process as we work to correct the mistakes of the past and create a stronger foundation for the generations that follow.

Some of the most meaningful work I’ve ever done 🙏🏾🕯️❤️
