Art does not exist in isolation. It is part of a larger dialogue that spans continents, generations, and communities.

This week, members and friends of the Tel Aviv Museum of Art’s American Friends traveled to Connecticut for a day dedicated to art, learning, and connection. We began at the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation, immersing ourselves in the legacy of two immigrants whose work reshaped modern art and forever changed the way we think about color, form, material, and perception. We then continued to Yale University Art Gallery, a remarkable institution that has long served as a center for artistic and intellectual exchange.

A special thank you to @fritzhorstman and @keely_org for their generosity, insight, and thoughtful stewardship. Through their perspectives, the collections came alive in ways that inspired us deeply!

Thank you as well to our TAMAF board members, patrons, longtime supporters, and the many new faces who joined us. It is because of this growing community that we are able to create meaningful experiences that connect local stories with global conversations through art.

✨ Overdue but better late than never ✨: congratulations to @curatormaggie and @miljohnruperto on their beautiful, smart, and very cool show that recently opened @cantorarts. We live in a world that, in the words of Werner Herzog, “nothing is real, nothing is certain.” This exhibition shows us that.

This is Miljohn’s largest solo show to date, and Maggie is the best curator for the task. Maggie has been such a wonderful AAAI collaborator, and we are so honored to host this exhibition at the Cantor. You have to come see “Animal, Vegetable, nor Mineral: Works by Miljohn Ruperto” — it’s full of things we’ve never done before at the museum. Plus Miljohn is the best 🩶

The show closes Sept. 14, so you have all summer. Thank you @noghost_justshell for such thoughtful coverage in @artinamerica. See you at the Cantor!

LUX et VERITAS: Parents Weekend at Yale visiting our beloved @cuatrovillareal now a senior- being w multi-generations of friends was food for the soul.
The Yale School of Art and the Schwarzman Center hosted an artist talk with the incredible Seyi Adeyinka & Kelly Orgeman followed by a special viewing of Celestial Garden (Yale), a new exhibition by Leo who is a Yale alum ’90. The work unfolds in perpetually evolving abstract compositions inspired by nature’s intricate patterns. Plush carpets and seating invite viewers to pause, reflect, and be immersed in a dynamic interplay of light / sound. Gratitude to: Dr. Kymberly Pinder, Dean of the Yale School of Art; Schwarzman Center’s Executive Director, Rachel Fine & Artistic Director, Jennifer Newman; Stephanie Wiles, Director of Yale University Art Gallery; and Kim Heirston.
The Yale University Art Gallery (Louis Kahn first major commission, opened in 1953) has an new acquisitions and an inspirational 3rd floor re-hang under the vision of Keely Orgeman, Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art and head of the department at @yaleartgallery … Cuatro is passionate about art history and wrote a paper on the Manet he explains to us in his finest art historian persona (yes he is an actor)!
Another highlight was seeing the William Blake and Hew Locke exhibitions at the newly restored Yale Center for British Art designed by @louiskahnarchitect - his final building (opened in 1977).
@yale mission is to improve the world through research, education, preservation, and practice, and to educate leaders for all sectors of society. In a time when all levels of education are being threatened in our country- the vibrancy and thirst for excellence witnessed here is especially poignant.

We are thrilled to share that @aigadesign has designated both “Mickalene Thomas / Portrait of an Unlikely Space” and “Seeing and Not Believing: The Photography of Allan Chasanoff” among the select winners of its 50 Books | 50 Covers Competition for 2023. Marking its 100th year, this competition recognizes and celebrates the best-designed books and book covers of the year.

Designed by @polymode, ”Mickalene Thomas / Portrait of an Unlikely Space” won in the “Best Cover” category. The book’s faux-velvet cover mimics the protective interior of the type of case for a photograph or miniature painting that was popular in mid-nineteenth-century America. Other elements, such as the gold-foil stamp and ornamental frame, also mimic the appearance of a portrait case and are echoed by period-specific motifs throughout the book’s pages. The catalogue was published in tandem with the exhibition “Mickalene Thomas / Portrait of an Unlikely Space,” curated by @mickalenethomas and Keely Orgeman.

Mónika Sziládi’s “Seeing and Not Believing: The Photography of Allan Chasanoff,” won in the “Best Book” category and was designed by Christopher Sleboda and Kathleen Sleboda. The publication brings Chasanoff’s contribution to Postmodern photography to a wider audience, underscoring how the artist’s work challenges our assumptions about believing what we see. The design of the book invokes principles that were foundational for Chasanoff and seeks to honor his spirit, which found beauty in the unconventional and magic in the details.

Tiffany Sprague, the Gallery’s Director of Publications and Editorial Services edited each volume, both distributed by @yalebooks.

Everyday I’m reminded that my life is a testament for those who know and believe in the impossible…

As a child, starting at age 11 through 16, I was misdiagnosed with oppositional defiance disorder, conduct disorder and cannabis abuse.

Then again, at the end of adolescence and at age 19, I was misdiagnosed with Schizoaffective Schizophrenia. Which meant in addition to suffering from Schizophrenia I was also purported to simultaneously suffer from a bipolar mood disorder.

In every way possible, systems have tried to destroy and strip me of my genius, self-determination and personhood… But through the grace of the all that is, I lived to tell a different story.

A story of the unrelenting refusal to be conquered and accept what both the medical and prison industrial complexes had planned for my future.

Complexities and contradictions are foregrounded in “Mickalene Thomas / Portrait of an Unlikely Space" at the Yale University Art Gallery.⁠
⁠
Featuring 45 artworks, the exhibition pairs historic objects and contemporary works. Small 19th-century portraits featuring Black sitters—some known, some unknown, some freed, some enslaved—make up an imagined community, in Thomas’s words a “chosen family,” in the exhibition space.⁠

These are joined by 20th- and 21st-century pieces by the likes of Lebohang Kganye, Sula Bermudez-Silverman, Curtis Talwst Santiago, Wardell Milan II, Devin N. Morris, Adia Millett, Mary Enoch Elizabeth Baxter, and Betye Saar.⁠

Co-Curators Thomas and Keely Orgeman chose the contemporary works to expand upon notions of “domesticity, family, interiority, intimacy, and ownership that existed under slavery and continue to affect our lives today,” as Thomas writes in her catalogue essay.⁠

Reflecting on an amazing Fall 2023 and the launch of our Visiting Artist Program with Mickalene Thomas. Over the course of three months, Mickalene spent time with our Fellows and apprentices to conduct studio visits and workshops, and engaged in a panel discussion in partnership with Bernard Lumpkin and the Yale University Art Gallery. We are grateful to see this pilot program take flight, and even more-so for Mickalene’s generosity of time and professionalism throughout the course of the program. Endless thanks again to Mickalene and her studio for their participation, and all the hard work and coordination that went into this partnership!
