Goalkeepers who focus on starting positions are significantly more successful making saves on the soccer field. ⁣
⁣
Players ask all the time.⁣
⁣
“How do I get noticed by college soccer coaches as a goalkeeper?”⁣
⁣
Focus on starting position.⁣
⁣
A quality starting position will lead to far more successful actions than being out of position. ⁣
⁣
So always stay behind ball line?⁣
⁣
Not necessarily. At the next level recognizing where your support lies and the dangerous area also comes into play.⁣
⁣
Take this save by @stanfordmenssoccer GK @r0wanschnebly
⁣
⁣
Rowan recognizes the support coverage on his post , allowing him to take a more central position that makes a quick micro shuffle step extension dive into a comfortable parry.⁣
⁣
⁣
So how do we create goalkeeper training environments that layer this game realism? ⁣

Goalkeepers are ALWAYS to blame for mistakes because the youth soccer culture does not encourage them to take risks on the pitch. ⁣
⁣
⁣
I hear it all the time. ⁣
⁣
Team Coach: “I wish my goalkeeper could play with confidence, like this player over here.” — Points to their center forward who mishits a shot on goal. ⁣
⁣
That same coach, when their goalkeeper takes an awkward prep touch and the ball bounces off them into the shin of an opposing attacker: “What are you doing?! What were you thinking?! Do I need to find someone that can play with their feet?!” ⁣
⁣
Do you see the problem here? ⁣
⁣
Both players performed actions that were unsuccessful, yet one is praised and the other is shunned despite both being correct on intent. Which of these players is going to be more willing to accept more responsibility? The goalkeeper or the forward? ⁣
⁣
⁣
If we want to build goalkeepers that are excited to take on responsibility, we need to change our coaching behaviors around mistakes, and praise the intent and commitment to an action over the end result. ⁣
⁣
⁣
How do your club environments manage possession mistakes with your keepers? ⁣
