This week is Feeding Tube Awareness Week! It’s been almost a year since Kehlani had her G-tube surgically placed.

On March 8, 2022 we took her in for a consult with a GI doctor because she would often sound congested or cough a lot when taking her bottle feeds. We also had a swallow study done a few weeks prior, which showed that some milk from the bottle was getting in her airways. She was just a little over 5 months at the time, and we knew eventually that she would probably have to get a feeding tube because of her medical condition.

Babies with Miller-Dieker Syndrome (Lissencephaly) are at a high risk of aspiration when fed orally due to their low muscle tone, and difficulty with swallowing. This means that food or liquids can get in their lungs instead of going down to their stomach, which can lead to pneumonia making it extremely difficult for our babies to come back from.

Her GI doctor didn’t want us to wait any longer and sent us right over to Scottish Rite hospital to be admitted for surgery the next day.
This was a really hard decision that we had to make, but we knew it was necessary in order for Kehlani to continue to thrive.

She had a successful G-tube placement the next day on March 9, 2022 and we were sent home the day after. The G-tube allows her to receive proper nourishment, and makes it easy to give her medications.
Although she is primarily fed via her G-tube with her milk formula, we also feed her small amounts of baby food purée by mouth if she’s interested in it.

Swipe to see photos of the day she had surgery, being sent home, and trying sweet potatoes for the first time! 💙💜

It’s February, which means it’s Black History Month! I was telling a co-worker about Kehlani and our journey, and the next day she brought me this t-shirt for her. Keep writing your own story baby girl and inspiring people you don’t even know.

I am calling myself out!

Because of my lack of mobility work at younger ages, I went through injuries I probably wouldn’t have. And shortened my basketball career years before I should have been done.

Thankfully it lead to me a position to help all levels of hoopers not go through what I have.

So HOOPERS 🏀… do more mobility work. I promise your future self and potential career will thank you for it!
