CGA Project Spotlight: The Hudson Square BID invited @wearecgarts to curate and produce the inaugural Hudson Square Canvas, an outdoor exhibition of artworks commissioned for multiple properties along Varick Street in New York City. The project’s objective was to present inviting artworks in a challenging area of the district that encouraged pedestrians to enjoy the streetscape and reflect the creativity of the industries that call Hudson Square home. Pictured here is a detail from one of the Hudson Square Canvas murals entitled "keep chopping (dinosaur jr.)" by JMikal Davis, aka Hellbent. His work is grounded in the earliest experiments of abstract art and the influence of music on the genre. His paintings are layered, bright, and races across whatever surface he happens to be working upon. Photo credit: @kelliegraphy & @kendraroberts524. Commissioned & presented by Hudson Square BID. Curated by Common Ground Arts. See this work now at 131 Varick in NYC. #curator #curators #curatorial #curatorlife #curatorialproject #artcurator #art #contemporaryart #contemporaryartist #mural #muralartist #publicart #publicartist #painting #artistsoninstagram #design #interiordesign #architecture #placemaking #creativeplacemaking #creative #artconsultant #artadvisor #contemporaryartwork #artexhibition #publicartinstallations #wearecga #wearecgarts #hudsonsquarecanvas #hudsonsquare

CGA PROJECT SPOTLIGHT: Hudson Square Canvas is a new initiative for presenting exciting visual art projects reflective of this neighborhood’s creative community. The inaugural exhibition, curated by Common Ground Arts, features five new projects ranging from large-scale murals to sculptural installations that play with color in various ways. Designed for specific buildings and public spaces along a busy stretch of Varick Street, these dynamic and colorful artworks invite daily inhabitants and visitors to explore the historic district now infused with new vitality. Katie Merz, known for her use of personal pictograms and hieroglyphs drawn from stories, conversations and research, creates two unique printed works for 161 Varick and 181 Varick using playful pictograms that reflect both the history and the present moment of the neighborhood. Pictured here are two works by Katie: Hudson Square Hieroglyphics (161 Varick Street) and Varick Street Verticals (181 Varick Street). these days it's the little, unexpected moments of light that bring joy + keep us connected.

today is the first day of hanukkah ~ the festival of lights. at a time when much feels uncertain and brightness feels hard to comeby, creating magic in the everyday, whether that’s creating a piece of art for a friend (like @kelliegraphy) generously did here or gifting yourself the pleasure of a bath each night or a sunrise walk with your family. this time of year, while often filled with quality family + friend time, is truly about connection.

whether you celebrate or not, today, and beyond, we’re lighting a few extra candles, creating a little more art, calling a couple more loved ones and doing what we can to safeguard our spirit.

sending love and light your way,
team west~bourne
