Technically the 3rd Pass Southbound is Silver Pass on the Nüümü Poyo (JMT). This was one of the nicer passes but anything with snow takes everything to another level. It was so Awesome to share it with @kelsey_outside and her awesome badass Mom.

Did you know that Nüümü Poyo is the original Paiute name for the same ancestral trade route known now as the John Muir Trail?

I might’ve had a rough year for racing, but my athletes didn’t. Four of my runners had big events in the last two months and I’m so proud!

Three of them are 40–44, two are nurses with wild schedules, and all of them juggle travel, careers, and other sports/activities on top of ultrarunning.

Performance coaching is my favorite kind of problem solving. The bigger the puzzle, the more fired up I get. I love working with busy people who have demanding jobs and chaotic lives, because that’s where creativity and strategy matter most. And while I adore coaching athletes in their 20s with open schedules and all the time and energy in the world to train, there’s something extra special about working with busy people in their 30s and 40s.

Watching people get fitter is awesome. But watching them get more confident in that fitness and realize how capable they are is next fucking level awesome.

Putting yourself out there and falling flat on your face really sucks. I would know, it’s happened to me plenty over the years. As a lot of you know, I’ve been dealing with a chronic overheating issue for 5ish years now, and it feels like I get more heat sensitive every year despite all my efforts to adapt.

My 214-mile race came to an abrupt and embarrassing end at mile 70 on Friday night. I felt good for the first 20–25 miles before the sun started to spank me. From 25–40 I got really hot, but was still able to keep calories and water down. Running around Convict Lake in the shade gave me some relief, but the second I stepped back into the sun I threw up. And kept throwing up for the next 10 miles. By the time I rolled into Crowley I was fully depleted, but after nearly an hour there I managed to keep some carbs and salt down.

The next 6 miles to Tom Place actually felt fine and I started to feel hopeful again. But then even tiny sips of water came right back up for literally 10 miles until I was dry heaving. I was in a deep hole and it felt like there was no crawling my way out of it.

I thought about pushing to 100 “just because,” but those miles were un-crewed and I didn’t feel very confident in my legs after keeping next to nothing down the previous 30 miles. I didn’t want to end up as a medical liability for the race, so I withdrew after 45min of deciding what to do at the aid station💔.

I’m really proud of my crew. They helped me make the best decisions possible with what I was dealing with.

I’m embarrassed and disappointed, but I’m also proud that I showed up and tried, even without much longer-distance racing experience. For now, I think I’m pumping the brakes on racing (in running👀). Still going to run plenty because I enjoy it and it keeps me fit for mountain things. Just less volume for a while I focus on skiing and climbing again for a bit and reevaluate what I want out of racing (again lol).

I left Mammoth on August 30th because the separation anxiety from being away from Ben and the dogs finally got the best of me.

Since coming home, training hasn’t felt the same after running over 400 miles in Mammoth in August. Exactly what I expected, but still a little tough to swallow. On top of that, my right knee started acting up on the 25th. There is absolutely no rhyme or reason to it. Most days it feels totally fine, other days it’s cranky and I have to play it super safe.

Last week was supposed to be my biggest training week, but between my knee and my headspace, I noped out. Which turned this week into a big week. This week might look good zoomed out on paper, but it honestly wasn’t my best week of training despite the big numbers. All discipline, zero motivation.

I’m obvisouly more than ready to dial my running volume back 🤣 I definitely found my current limit in this training block. I’m very proud of the work I put in, but I’m honestly pretty mentally exhausted from running alone so much.

Now we are less than 3 weeks out from race day. What I lack in experience, I’ve tried to make up for in fitness and course recon. Which absolutely won’t even come close to closing the gap on what I lack in experience, but I did what I could!!

Photos are from August in Mammoth plus a bonus Keaton and Cumbre cameo at the end.

@kelsey_outside has been working with @krissyclimbs for 7 months and the progress she’s made speaks for itself!! Swipe to see all the progress you can’t see in a photo.

She didn’t come to Black Iron looking for a quick fix, she came ready to level up her performance, fuel her training, and build routine and habits that support her goals. Her body comp changes are a byproduct of consistently showing up, eating smarter, lifting heavy, and learning how to better recover from running.

She’s training hard/smart, feeling good, and finally seeing herself as the athlete she’s always been. This is what happens when you start eating and training with purpose!!

Go, Kelsey, go!!!

Leona Divide 100K ✔️Did the damn thing, complete with a @wser qualifier in the bank! 💃🏼 a gnarly 63.3 miles, 10K elevation gain in 16:34. Overall a genuinely fun, amazing day thanks the worlds best pacer @kelsey_outside. This terrain and sheer vert on the back 50k was brutal- seriously could not have done it without the trail queen/cheerleader extraordinaire Kelsea! So many amazing memories made yesterday- proof that you can accomplish anything with a little grit and determination. Thank you everyone for your support of my crazy adventures and a special thank you to @khraces for an excellent event with the best race crew 💛🙏🏻🌲

Spring Ski Dayz in Mammoth. Missing some of the usual crew members. But the Sierra cement and Apres has been great.
