Saturday @tanglewoodmusicfestival came with a hard choice: do I see the @bu_tanglewood Young Artists Orchestra in Ozawa Hall, or a conversation between legendary artists @laurieandersonofficial and Peter Sellars at the Linde Center? I opted for the latter, but was still able to catch a good bit of @linitaconductor conducting Copland's "Billy the Kid" (because two Copland ballets are better than one) and the end of @valerie_coleman_music 's Ashé, which has become a new BUTI staple.

The evening belonged to @thebostonpops and the annual John Williams Film Night-palooza. After navigating long lines to get in - this year, Tanglewood joined the sad reality of bag checks and metal detectors - the lawn was packed all the way to the back, if not quite as full as when John was here himself. Conducted by @kendavidmasur , the evening was hosted by @tcm host @benmankiewicz , who brought a fresh, engaging perspective to this cherished Tanglewood tradition.

Personally, I didn't love the film pastiches they showed to accompany John's music to Harry Potter, Jurassic Park and Star Wars - I doubt John himself would have approved dissociating his scores from their intended scenes. But, it ended with a bang, with the Pops performing the final 15 minutes of E.T. straight through, surely one of the most emotional and transporting film sequences ever written. Fun fact: according to Mankiewicz, when Williams was struggling to write the music for this sequence, Spielberg told him to "just let it flow", and ended up re-cutting the scene to fit John's score.

Last night (8/15) at Tanglewood, the Boston Pops, conductor Ken-David Masur, and host Ben Mankiewicz paid tribute to the maestro of movies — John Williams. The magic of his film scores was brought to life with the Pops performing alongside specially edited scenes and movie clips.
