Happy GRAMMY voting season! I’m proud to be a voting member of the Recording Academy, and am very excited to listen to so many incredible recordings that are up for consideration this year. Seeing everyone share their projects, and knowing firsthand how much work, care, expense and time is put into these albums, inspires me so much. So please keep them coming!

I’d also like to humbly share this album For Your Consideration in the category of Best Classical Compendium. It’s the debut recording release of my dear friend and colleague of multiple decades, clarinetist @jamestshields, featuring chamber music by the inimitable @kenjibunch, and we @overlookquartet are delighted to be included on over half the album, collaborating with James for the title work “Cookbook” and the achingly beautiful “Lament.”

We are immensely proud of this album, and so grateful to everyone involved including our wonderful artistic collaborators, @musicasolis for releasing it, and @allclassicalradio for the beautiful recording space in Portland.

Thank you for considering us ❤️

Our deep thanks to @bodyvoxdancecenter for hosting our LateWORKS performance last night—and for letting us preview part of the show at their FREE monthly open floor event! We had a blast playing this movement from Kenji Bunch’s Cookbook with The Overlook quartet and dancer Laura! You can hear this work later this weekend at the @chehalemculturalcenter on Sunday afternoon!

What does freedom sound like?

NOVA opens its 2026–27 season with Lost Freedom, a powerful program exploring freedom, displacement, and resilience through music by Franz Schubert and Kenji Bunch, alongside a world premiere by University of Utah composer Jessica Rudman.

The program features Schubert’s beloved wanderer songs, his fiery Quartettsatz, and Bunch’s Lost Freedom, which honors the experiences of Japanese Americans during and after World War II. The performance will also feature soprano Jin-Xiang Yu performing with NOVA’s Artistic Director Kimi Kawashima, and narration by Plan-B Theatre’s Artistic Director Jerry Rapier.

Some musicians have colleagues... Hamilton Cheifetz has friends!

Over the years, Hamilton has built deep and meaningful musical friendships with some of Portland's wonderful musicians. On Sunday, September 27, he's bringing a few of them together on stage at The Old Church Concert Hall for Hamilton and Friends, a special program celebrating the pleasure of making music together. We are so proud to present this concert!

Admission is "Pay What You Will," with a portion of proceeds will go to support the String Ensemble Community Outreach (SECO) program which features PSU music students in performance at local prisons and retirement centers. focm.org
