For the past 118 days I've been in the hospital battling AMSAN (Acute Motor Sensory Axonal Neuropathy) Guillain-Barré syndrome. With an expected recovery time of 18 months or longer, every day has been a struggle mentally and physically. On March 21st an adverse autoimmune reaction to the Epstein-Barr virus triggered my immune system to attack the nerves responsible for proper motor function and sensory processing, ultimately leaving me quadriplegic with full respiratory paralysis. I unknowingly experienced many seizures during the hours leading up to my hospitalization, even continuing during my 10 day coma. My first month after regaining consciousness was spent relearning how to talk, swallow and breathe on my own. As I continue my journey of recovery, I am reminded that we as humans fail to notice how fragile we are, living with a false sense of invincibility. What we have today is never promised for tomorrow, and every day I wish that I would have made that realization sooner, so I urge you to cherish the present rather than mourn the past. I am forever grateful for the nurses and doctors that devoted their time to taking care of me. To the family and friends that stuck with me when I was at my worst, I love you and you will always have a special place in my heart.
