A pretty special night for Guardians, our creative partners and clients at the New Zealand Best Design Awards. Taking home 1x Purple Pin. 8x Golds. 2x Silvers. 2x Bronzes. We believe the best work carries the spirit of those involved. It reflects the care invested, the relationships built and the intent carried through every detail. For us, it’s brand guardianship in practice. Pairing design excellence with a deeper sense of responsibility for the influence brands have on our world. Congratulations to all the other winners. Plenty of exceptional work to celebrate across the motu. 🌿

Kereama Taepa (Te Arawa, Te Āti Awa, Ngāti Whakaue) works where whakairo meets code. He has spent the past decade building a practice in te ao matihiko (the digital world), asking how Māori can carry mātauranga forward using the tools of now. Kereama's materials are emergent technologies: projection, 3D printing - which he has named "whakapī", augmented reality and virtual reality, used to carry stories of the past and the present. In 2023 his work became the first digital artwork acquired by the Parliamentary Collection, and he is well known for his colourful taonga. For Taepa, new tools are not a break from tradition but a continuation of it, "if you look to our past, you can see we've always been innovating." His father is the ceramic artist Wi Taepa, and Kereama and his brother Ngātai were among Wi's first students. That whakapapa runs through the work, sitting alongside the pop iconography of an urban 1980s childhood. Pac-Man and Space Invaders meet wheku (carved faces) and customary pattern, each carrying its own kōrero (story). His public sculptures stand across the the country: Tohorā on the Kāpiti Coast (2020), Pōhutukawa on the Tauranga Waterfront (2018), a (very) brief history of aotearoa for Wellington's Four Plinths Sculpture Project (2016), and tichi in New Plymouth (2015). He has exhibited nationally and internationally, with works held in collections here and overseas. As a Toi Iho artist, Kereama Taepa carries customary knowledge into new tools, showing that for Māori, innovation has always been part of the tradition. Toi Iho works alongside artists to uphold authenticity and cultural integrity. See more about Kereama Taepa and explore his wider body of work on our website at toiiho.org.nz. Over the year ahead, we'll continue meeting the Māori artists whose work carries stories from whenua to world. Follow us to meet them and learn more about the best of Māori art.

If you’re in Wellington a trip to the Dowse Art Museum @thedowse should always be on your list. This time it was a treat to visit the gallery in the company of @hiraani.himona Director of Te Tuhi (SLIDE 2), writer-academic-activist-national treasure (and whanaunga I am proud to say) Ngāhuia Te Awekōtuku (SLIDE 3) and artist @ngaroma_riley and whanau (SLIDE 4) I was glad to catch the exhibition “Things We Don’t Talk About”, partly because it included so many TMG artists and friends … among them Hiria Anderson-Mita @painterhiria (SLIDE 5) Ngaroma Riley (SLIDE 6) Russ Flatt @russflatt (SLIDE 7) Maureen Lander @landermaureen and Ngahuia Harrison @ngahuiaharrison (SLIDE 8), Kereama Taepa @kereamataepa (SLIDE 9) Peata Larkin (SLIDE 10) Wayne Youle (SLIDE 11) Zena Elliott (SLIDE 12) and Rangi Kipa (SLIDE 13) As well … the spectacular pātaka whakairo, ‘Nuku Tewhatewha’, is on permanent display and has a fascinating history (SLIDES 1 + 16-19) On September 27 1839, Te Āti Awa rangatira signed a piece of parchment that supposedly “sold” the entire Wellington region to the British-owned ‘New Zealand Company’. It was soon clear that the rangatira had been deceived. Wiremu Tako Ngātata was one of them. He and his iwi had had no intention of selling. Rather, they thought they were giving anchorage rights to the ship ’Tory’. The deed of sale was later declared invalid but the damage was done. Surveyors forced iwi out of (what is now) central Wellington and Wiremu Tako Ngātata made it his life’s work to help his people reclaim their whenua. In the 1850s, as physical symbols of support for the Kingitanga Māori king movement, seven new buildings were created. ‘Nuku Tewhatewha’ was one of the seven. Commissioned by Wiremu Tako Ngātata in 1856 it was built under the guidance of Ngāti Tuwharetoa carver Te Heuheu Tukino IV … and two years later Pōtatau Te Wherowhero of Waikato was declared the first Māori king. ‘Nuku Tewhatewha’ is a symbol of the fight for traditional authority that continues today and is the only one of the seven original buildings to survive fully intact. SLIDE 20 shows the locations and dates of the buildings that have been lost.

We were told it couldn’t be made. The idea behind the Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry trophy was ambitious from the start. Two completely separate sculptural forms, representing South Africa and New Zealand, designed to come together and hold as one through magnetism. Manufacturers told us it wouldn’t work. Nothing like it had been made before. But rather than change the idea to fit what was considered possible, we kept pushing to find a way to make it happen. It took more than a year of design, development, testing and problem-solving, bringing together specialist expertise from New Zealand, South Africa, Australia and the UK. Because some ideas are worth fighting for. The result is a world-first trophy that physically reflects the invisible force that has bound these two great rugby nations together for more than a century. @rugbysgreatestrivalrytour @allblacks @bokrugby @design_awards @beagleandhound @bonolo_chepape @kereamataepa #RugbysGreatestRivalry #RGR26 #StrategyCreative #AllBlacks #Springboks
